The Department of Dermatology was established in the year 2005 at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. The faculty are well qualified and have expertise in treating dermatological disorders like acne and its complications such as pigmentation and scars, pigmentary disorders especially vitiligo, hair disorders, nail disorders, skin infections, autoimmune connective tissue disorders, Vesiculobullous disorders, eczemas, psoriasis, allergic disorders like urticaria and contact dermatitis. With special emphasis on notifiable diseases like HIV and Leprosy.

The Department is dedicated in providing excellence in teaching, research and appropriate patient care along with the application of newer advances and procedures for the best outcome in the management and patient satisfaction.

The Department is headed and guided by Prof.Dr.Jayakar Thomas who provides masterly guidance and valuable, relentless support to the team members. He has more than 40 years of teaching expertise and more than 200 publications to his credit. The department comprises of well qualified senior and junior faculties who are dedicated to provide the best quality of patient care

The Department of Dermatology functions at OP no 2 and provides outpatient care from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on all days. On holidays it functions from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. The skilled and experienced dermatologists aim in not only treating the patients but also provide proper counseling so that the patient understand nature of the disease and prevent recurrences.

We regularly conduct speciality clinics weekly once by the allotted faculty as per the schedule. Currently functioning speciality clinics are as follows

INPATIENT CARE

Inpatient care is provided whenever necessary especially for patients with autoimmune disorders, vesiculobullous disorders and severe infections as and when necessary. We have team of 2 units with dedicated faculty. We also give provide referral dermatological consultations.

The Department of Dermatology is actively involved in the education of Undergraduate students (MBBS), Post graduate Students (MD) and Allied Health Science student (B.Sc.). The UG students learning module is conducted via theory classes interspersed with integrated teaching which is conducted in collaboration with other departments are also conducted to provide deeper knowledge in the subject, clinical postings in the OPD where the students are trained in the management of common cases, procedural demonstration, case presentations.

Training and teaching of the Post Graduate students include regular conduct of theory classes, Case presentations, Group discussions, Journal clubs, bedside clinics on regular basis. They are encouraged to undertake research work and periodical thesis review is done. PGs attend peripheral postings in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, General medicine and Pediatrics. They are also encouraged to attend National and International Conferences to present papers and posters and also be updated on the recent advances. They have also received prizes/awards for their presentations. They are also given expert training in various dermatological procedures. Our postgraduates have been placed in reputed hospitals and clinics.

For Allied Health Science students, we organize regular theory classes based on their syllabus, they assist various dermatological procedures and attend Outpatient department regularly to acquaint themselves with the common dermatological conditions.

In COVID-19 situation where the students are unable to attend classes in person, we conduct online classes. Our department library has sufficient textbooks for teaching and research purposes.

The faculty and postgraduates actively participate in research activities under the guidance of senior faculty. Major thrust area of research includes urticaria, pigmentary disorders, acne and psoriasis. The department also organizes guest lectures, CME and public awareness programs on a periodical basis.

Completed and ongoing projects

We have completed around 41 research projects and have 5 ongoing projects at present. We have more than 44 publications so far in national and international journals. 2 Ph.D. candidates have also completed their research projects successfully in the Dermatology Department

We are well equipped with the necessary equipment for performing various specialized dermatological procedures. The procedural management offered by Department of Dermatology include Nd:Yag Laser mainly for various pigmentary disorders and tattoo removal, IPL mainly for vascular lesions and hair removal, RF cautery for removal of warts, DPN, skin tags, moles etc , Microdermabrasion for facial rejuvenation, pigmentary disorders and acne scars , Derma roller mainly for acne scars, Platelet Rich Plasma therapy mainly for alopecia, telogen effluvium, ulcers, periorbital melanosis and others, phototherapy for vitiligo and other inflammatory dermatoses.

Surgical procedures like split skin grafting, mini punch grafting, nail surgeries are also performed. We perform biopsies that adds on the confirmation of our clinical diagnosis. The histopathology of interesting cases is discussed in the department.

Side lab-procedures like KOH mount, Gram stain, Leishman stain, Giemsa stain, wet mount, slit skin smear, acid fast staining, Tzanck smear are performed on a regular basis as and when required.

We also provide outreach activities by conducting camps so as to provide medical facilities to rural areas and also provide drugs free of cost for minor ailments, poor and downtrodden patients. Patients requiring higher level of intervention, procedures, investigations, biopsies are referred to Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute for further management.

The department also provides consultation at peripheral centers such as Rural Health Center, Poonjeri and Urban Health Center, Karapakkam.

Dermatology also provides tele dermatology consultation during the times of natural calamities like cyclones, tsunami and pandemic via e-clinic initiated by our hospital.
