Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Department of Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) plays avitalrole in the hospital as it coordinates with all clinical departments for the management and rehabilitation of the patients with musculoskeletal issues.

The Department of Sports Medicine has facilities to provide both out-patient and in-patient care and is well equipped with state-of-the-art sports science lab, exercise physiology lab,biomechanics lab and gait lab. It has 3 specialty clinics as sports injury clinic, arthroscopy clinic and obesity clinic. The department has well qualified staff members and varioushigh-end equipment for treatment and training purposes. Awell-built indoor stadium, football ground and athletic turf track are available as per International standards.

Activities of the Rehabilitation Department includemanagement of Pain, Sports rehabilitation, Neurological, Orthopedic, Cardiac, Pulmonary, Pediatric, Burns, Geriatric, Gynecological care, pre and post-surgical andOccupational rehabilitation, Prosthetics and Orthotics prescription and Amputee rehabilitation,Community-based rehabilitation and Gait training.

The Team is headed by Prof &HOD. Dr.C. RameshMD, DNB(PMR) who has served in the Tamilnadu government as a Director at GIRM K.K. Nagar and MMC(Madras Medical College)with a richexperience of more than 30 years, along with well experienced, competentand dedicated team of Physiotherapists who treat patients on par with international standards.

Outpatient

The department of Physical medicine and rehab(PMR) provides outpatient services and inpatient services by assessing and treating pain through physical modalities and hands on techniques (Spinal Manipulation, soft tissue release, joint mobilization, posture correction), correcting deformities, artificial limbs prescription and fitting, orthotics and prosthetics prescription.

Inpatient

Inpatient care is facilitated by experienced senior physiotherapists in the wards and intensive care units under the guidance of senior physiatrist.

Another prime focus of the department of PMR is medical education which involves imparting knowledge to Undergraduates and post graduates MBBS(CRRI’S), (BPT and MPT), Nursing and AHS students.The teaching learning methods for BPT and MPT students comprises of theory classes, outpatient clinics, bed side clinical teaching, clinical tutorials, journal clubs, case presentations, seminars and workshops.

Thrust area of research include new approachesto pain relief and rehabilitation of the patient to the highest near normal possible and also improving efficacy of sports person performance.The department actively organizes conferences and CMEs with collaboration with School of physiotherapy.

Community based rehabilitation (CBR) is provided for rural communities.In addition to the above services consultation is provided at peripheralcenters such as our urban health at Karappakam, Poonjeri and Arun Excello sub center.
