The Department of Physiology is currently headed by Dr. Sanjay Andrew Rajaratnam who has completed his higher education at the Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai and is also the coordinator of the Medical Education Unit of Chettinad Hospitals and Research Institute. The department is constituted by Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Tutors. The teaching faculty of the department are well trained to motivate and facilitate holistic understanding of physiology by the students. The department also actively participates in medical research and trains students who are interested to pursue research in their careers.

The Department of Physiology participates in teaching principles of theoretical and practical Physiology as per the guidelines of Competency Based Medical Education to students of undergraduate and postgraduate medical and allied health sciences. An active mentorship program is structured when the students begin their period of study. Every student is allotted a mentor who is a teaching faculty of the department who helps the student throughout his/her period of study to overcome any difficulty in learning. Reputed scholars in the field of medicine are regularly invited for guest lectures on recent advances in Physiology & Medicine.

The Department of Physiology actively participates in translational medical research. It has a research laboratory that is equipped with regularly updated instruments. The faculty of the department also encourage students to participate in short term projects to inspire their growth in the field of research. The areas of thrust currently are in the fields of sleep physiology and exercise physiology.

Continuing medical education fixtures are regularly organized by the Department of Physiology to empower students with recent updates in Physiology and Medical Sciences.

The Department of Physiology has signed a MOU with the Dr MGR sports university recently. This is being used to empower the research related to sports and exercise physiology.
