Blood Bank in Chettinad Hospital functions and is in the diagnostic wing. It is furnished with state-of-the-art equipment and functions 24 hours a day, providing outstanding care for the patients as well as the donors. It was established as a Blood storage center in the year 2005. The llicense for operating blood bank, separation of blood components and apheresis were granted by Drug Controller in 2006, 2008 and 2013 respectively (License number: 270/28C).
The Blood bank is furnished with latest technology high throughput equipment including Refrigerated centrifuges, Deep freezers, Gel card centrifuge, incubator & reader, Cryobath, Plasma bath, Platelet agitator, Dielectric tube sealer, Sterile connecting device, Blood collection monitors, Plasma expresser, Laminar air flow cabinets, ELISA reader and washer, Hemocue equipment and sophisticated donor couches. Large storage facilities are also available.An active component preparation section is available, and components are prepared in more than 98% of collections.
The Serology section has an Automated System (Gel Technology) for reporting of blood groups and other immunohaematological tests.The department participates in External Quality Assessment Scheme (BEQAS) conducted by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers. The transfusion services are monitored by the Hospital Transfusion Committee in terms of the quality of transfusion, patient care, facilities and performance.
It is staffed by a proficient team of qualified, trained and committed medical officers, staff nurses and technicians. The Head of Pathology is the Technical Director & a designated Professor Pathology is the Medical Director of the blood bank, in addition to the technical supervisors, technicians and staff nurses who constitute the team. The team has undergone an all-inclusive training in the technical aspects of blood banking.
Patient care includes both Diagnostic and therapeutic services, comprising of blood grouping and Rh typing, Blood collection from donor and screening the blood for transfusion transmissible infections, component preparation, crossmatching and issue to the patients.
Undergraduate & postgraduate Allied Health Sciences (Blood Banking Medical Laboratory Technology and Medical Laboratory Technology) students along with Postgraduate MD Pathology students are trained in Blood Banking, Transfusion Services, Perioperative Services, Blood Donation Campaigns, Immunohematology, Antibody Screening, Modern Blood Banking and Troubleshooting. Undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Laboratory/Blood Bank Technology students are actively involved in projects as a part of their curriculum. There is an on- going CARE funded Faculty project. So far, there are nine completed research projects, one ongoing project. The blood bank provides exchange transfusion therapy for patients with Rat Killer poisoning. Blood Bank provides support to patients with Hemophilia and related Bleeding disorders and Thalassemia
All the donor blood samples are screened for transfusion transmissible infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and Malaria before they are issued for transfusion.
