National Service Scheme(NSS)
National Service Scheme(NSS)

National Service Scheme is an avenue for community service through team work. Through dedicated and sincere social work by NSS, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE), an assurance for strong nation building is anticipated. Around 600 NSS volunteers of CARE are actively involved in both regular camp activities and special camps since 15th May 2014.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has implemented the centrally sponsored scheme of National Service Scheme (NSS), which aims at the personality and character development of students in schools, colleges and Universities through community service. The Ministry had vide letter of even number dated 10th October, 2007 and allowed opening of new NSS units on self-financing basis in addition to the present system of fully funded units. National Service Scheme at CARE is comprised of two self financing units (SFU) sponsored by our Honorable Trustee. The Units are commissioned to function from the academic year 2014-15.

Objectives:

  • To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
  • To understand themselves in relation to their community.
  • To identify the needs and problems in the community, the solution of which they can be involved.
  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • To apply their education in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
  • To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters and
  • To practice national integration.

The motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless services and appreciation of another man’s point of view and also show consideration for fellow human beings. It insists that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole.

The symbol of the National Service Scheme is based on the ‘ Rath ‘ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS DAY with appropriate programmes and activities.
