ONLINE COURSE FOR LEARNING FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

ABOUT THE CENTRE FOR GLOBAL LANGUAGE

With immense pleasure we would like to share that the University through its Centre for Global and Indian Languages, CARE in association with Alliance Francaise of Madras (AF Madras) is to offer an Online Course for learning French as a foreign language across the students of all the constituent schools/colleges of CARE. The Centre has taken an initiative in the interest of the students to fully sponsor the online course in the form of granting 100% scholarship to the eligible students. Students will have to borne only expenses to procure the required books.

WHY LEARN FRENCH?

As the world is moving toward the concept of a Global Village, it becomes imperative to learn a language that has a global significance. In this age, networking is an essential skill/practice in every discipline. Earlier it was used as a strategy/or an effective tool in some sectors like management, social science and IT sector etc. But today international networking is directly related to increased market competition and sustainability. Foreign language competencies are among the crucial aspects for economic development, achievement, maintaining and expanding foreign trade in any sector. It is a perfect tool to prosper individually as well as institutionally and therefore contribute to the nation’s development.

SCOPE:

  • With over 30 French-speaking countries, it is a language spoken by about 300 million; both native and non-native speakers. It is the official language used by 29 countries of the world, cutting across five continents. French is the second most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union, after German and English.
  • The varieties of a French language is spoken by an estimated 120 million people in Africa spread across 24 francophone African countries. French is one of the few languages taught in every nation of the world and is among the most widely used languages of the United Nations Organization (UN), the African Union, and other organizations.
  • There are ever-growing job opportunities in French which have become the most popular choice among students. Most of the companies operating in the aeronautic, automotive, banking and finance, hotel management, international trade, journalism and media, education, luxury goods, and retailing sectors demand French as a prerequisite for recruitment.
  • French as a foreign language also boosts international information, helps in immigration to France, Canada and other Francophone countries. It also helps to access to rich culture and music. And it is the third most popular destination for international students.
  • French can also be described as “the bridge-building” language. Moreover, if you know French, you will open a whole new and existing world of knowledge as it is widespread in more than 56 countries in Africa, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Keeping that in mind the Centre, has taken this initiative to create awareness as well as to enrich and empower the students with a language that is internationally relevant.

ABOUT THE ONLINE COURSE

OBJECTIVES:

After 120 hours of class, i.e. 2 semesters, the participants will achieve the A1 level of Common European Framework for Languages and will be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • A successful completion will result in A1 level certification.

CURRICULUM

  1. Number of hours scheduled: 2 x 60 hrs =120 hours online, 60-40% hybrid course, 60% synchronic & 40% asynchronic
  2. This course can be used for credit exchange in the form of two 4 Credit elective courses under CBCS, subject to approval by the respective Board of Studies.
  3. In the present scenario, the course programme will be near 100% online. There may be a few contact mode seminars. The whole A1 Level of 120 hours is divided into 2:A1.1 (Semester 1) & A1.2 Levels (Semester 2). There will be appraisal/exam at the end of each semester and both will be conducted with 2 different means:

  • direct online teaching using video class and directed by the Teacher, 36 hours each semester
  • self-teaching with structured activities to be done by the students, using our LMS afinde.apolearn.com with compulsory activities to be conducted by each student autonomously, for a minimum time of 8 hours per unit, including production tasks (speaking and writing) to be posted on the LMS. The duration of connection to the LMS is unlimited during the course dates.
  • Duration of connection and activity tracking is activated for each Student and followed up by the teacher.

FINANCIAL TERMS

The cost incurred under this course will be fully funded by the University except the expenses incurred on procuring the set of books required for the completion of the course (which approximately comes to around Rs. 850/-).

ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. The Batch will comprise of 20 students who will be selected across the constituent schools/colleges. The proportionate bifurcation of students is:
    • Faculty of Medicine – 05 students
    • Faculty of Allied Health Sciences – 04 students
    • Chettinad College of Nursing – 03 students
    • Chettinad School of Law – 02 students
    • Chettinad School of Architecture – 02 students
    • Chettinad School of Physiotherapy – 02 students
    • Chettinad School of Pharmacy – 02 students
  2. It is requested that the respective Schools/Colleges should develop a criteria for selection and provide the details of the selected students as per the numbers stated above.
