The Department of Anaesthesiology at Chettinad hospital and Research Institutehas been providing safe, compassionate and effective patient care duringthe perioperative period and inthe Intensive Care Unit sinceits inception in the year 2005. The department commenced its Postgraduate training program for MD Anaesthesiology to train and tutor young minds from 2012 onwards. The quality of training and best academic facilities have resulted in the increase in the number of postgraduate seatsfrom 4 to 13 in 2019
Anaesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine provides comprehensive clinical care to all surgical specialties including General surgery,Orthopedics,Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Pediatric surgery, Plastic surgery, In vitro fertilization, Cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and Transplant surgeries in 15 operating rooms and other off-site locations. The department also extends its service in labor analgesia, acute and chronic pain services.

The Department is headed by Prof.Dr. AshokKulasekar MD, DA., and his team comprises of skilled and highly qualified DA/MD/DNB faculty comprising of Professors, Associate Professors,Assistant Professors, Senior Residents. The team is also ably supported by 30 Postgraduate students.

The team also comprise of operating staff nurses and operation theatre technicians headed by nursing supervisor.
A) Clinical Anesthesia
Department of Anaesthesiology provides anesthesia service to all surgical specialities including General surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Pediatric surgery, Plastic surgery, In vitro fertilization, Cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and Transplant surgeries.
B) Intensive Care
The department also oversees 12 bedded surgical ICU, where active care given to patients in the immediate postoperative period and 12 bedded General ICU , 6 bedded Cardiac ICU and 4 bedded Neuro ICU.
C) Acute and chronic pain relief
The department also has a pain clinic caters to acute and chronic pain relief including labouranalgesia and interventional therapies.
D) Non-operating room anaesthesia(NORA)
The department also provide anaesthesia service in Cath lab, Endoscopic surgeries and MRI.
E) Pre Anaesthetic fitness clinic
We also have a dedicated Pre-Anesthetic Clinic(PAC) to evaluate the patient for anesthetic fitness prior to surgery.
The department of Anaesthesiology is involved in teaching Under graduate (MBBS), Postgraduate (MD Anaesthesiology), B.Sc. Allied health science(Anesthesia technology & Accident and Emergency) courses.
Medical Postgraduate training program(13 candidates per year) includes seminars, weekly journal club, case discussion,research activities,skills lab simulation training and hands on training of all basic and advanced anesthetic techniques inside the operating room.
Medical Undergraduate training programincludes weekly lectures and vertical integration program; Internship training program includes skills lab training, operating room basics, and hands on training in basic procedures in anesthesia including IV cannulation,spinal anesthesia and intubation.

B.Sc. Allied Health Science-Anesthesia technology(6 candidates per year) training includes lectures, seminars, research activities, hands on training on preparation of operating room for various types of anesthesia and surgeries.B.Sc. Allied health science-Accident and Emergency (6 candidates per year) training program includes lectures, seminars, research activities, and hands on training in Emergency Room.
All faculty members actively participate in research activities with completed projects, ongoing projects and publication individually. The department also encourages postgraduate students to carry out research and encourages them to publish papers in both national and international journals/conferences.
The department organizes conferences and CMEs on updates in anesthesia by inviting eminent speakers across the state for guest lectures.
Faculty and Postgraduates actively participate in state/national conferences including guest lectures, chairing scientific sessions, oral paper/poster presentations.

The department organizes yearly conference “CHETANCON” every year on the occasion of Anesthesia day which is attended by delegates from all over India.
It’s a great privilege for us that we have co-organized an international conference on “Interventional pain management- FIPP review course with cadaveric workshop’, organized by World Institute of Pain, in 2011. The conference was a 3-dayprogram with workshop which was a grand success with 30 international speakers and 500+ delegates.
The department was a co-organizer for “ISACON-2019” state conferences which was conducted in Chettinad hospital and research institute as a 3 days program, attended by 2000 delegates.
