Gastroenterology branch of medicine which deals with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract, liver and pancreatic-biliary system in children and adults.The Department of Medical Gastroenterology at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute was established in the year 2010. The Departmentoffers DM program in Gastroenterology for one eligible candidate every year.We offer state of art endoscopic procedures for the medical management of conditions such as gastrointestinal bleed, gastrointestinal, malignancies, removal of foreign bodies.

The Team of consultants in the Department of Gastroenterology at CHRI have immense skill and experience dealing with the diagnosis and medical treatment of conditions of the digestive tract and liver. The gastroenterologists make use of cutting-edge technology for patient care, as a result of which patients have more options now than ever for the treatment of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary disease.


The Department of Medical Gastroenterology provides outpatient services from 08:30 AM to 04:00 PM on all days.During holidays the services are restricted from 8:30 AM to 02:00 PM.Inpatient care is facilitated by providing utmost care to the sick patients. Patients can choose between general wards, semiprivate rooms and private rooms.

Hepatitis B Clinic: The department of Medical Gastroenterology has systematized a Hepatitis B specialty clinic on Monday from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm. Patients are screened and treated for Hepatitis B. Special attention to Hepatitis B vaccination is given.

Pancreas clinic: Patients with pancreatic disorders and pancreatic malignancy are treated. Special care is given to pancreatic enzyme insufficiency and malnutrition.

IBD Clinic: Patient’s with IBD (Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease) are treated.

Inpatient care is facilitated by providing utmost care to the sick patients. Patients can choose between general wards, semiprivate rooms and private rooms.

The salient feature of intensive care unit is that the unit is fully equipped with all necessary lifesaving equipment like multipara monitors, ventilators, centralized oxygen and suction facilities, infusion pumps, syringe pump, defibrillators etc. Medical emergencies such as acute pancreatitis, Acute on chronic liver failure, Upper GI Bleeds are treated.

Prime focus of the Department of Medical Gastroenterology is medical education which involves imparting knowledge to PostgraduateDM students and Allied Health Sciences. The teaching methodology adopted for the Post doctorial students includes Outpatient clinic, Bedside clinical teaching, lectures in basic sciences, diagnostic challenges, laboratory approach to common medical disorders, update on emergencies, journal clubs, interdepartmental discussions, CME, Workshops and conferences.

The department of medical gastroenterology trains MD students during there one month of posting to the department.

The Department also teaches BSc Allied Health Sciences students in endoscopy procedures.

The Department is involved in PhD programs in association with departments of Pathology and Biotechnology.

Thrust areas for researchincludes IBD, colon cancer, chronic pancreatitis and Regenerative studies (Islet cell Transplantation)

Ongoing research project on the Role of Micro RNA- 122 in regulating the phenotypes of colon cancer cells through targeting AEG1 protein –(In association with Department of Biotechnology)
