The Department of Neurosurgery is one of the main Superspeciality Departments at Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute and takes care of all the Surgical problems of Brain, Spine and Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nerves. The Department has a dedicated Neurosurgical Operation Theatre equipped with the state-of-art equipment including high end Operating Microscope, Neurosurgical drill, CUSA, Neuro endoscope and is backed by a dedicated Neurosurgical ICU to take care of critically ill patients. 24-hour trauma care is also provided for patients with brain and spine injuries, commonly caused by the road accidents.
Prof. V. G. Ramesh, MCh, DNB(GS), DNB(NS), FRCS(G), FICS, IFAANS, who is the Head of the Department is a Senior Neurosurgical Teacher with over 35 years of experience. He has worked as Faculty in reputed Medical Colleges of the State and has trained several batches of Neurosurgeons. He is also postgraduate examiner in various Universities in India and abroad. He has many research publications and is in the Editorial Board of several Neurosurgical Journals. Prof. K. V. Karthikeyan, MCh, is a senior neurosurgeon with excellent microsurgical skills with special interest in tumour surgery, skull base surgery, neuroendoscopy and Pediatric Neurosurgery. He also has many research publications.
The Department of Neurosurgery has regular out-patient and in-patient services, 24-hour emergency and neurotrauma care, dedicated Neurosurgical Operation Theatre, ICU, etc., well supported by a team of Neuroanesthetists, Neurology team and Radiologists.
All the common and complicated neurosurgical procedures are performed here. This includes brain tumour surgery, skull base surgery including endoscopic surgery for pituitary tumours, aneurysm and AVM surgery, Cervical and Lumbar Disc Surgery, Complex Spine Fixation, Spinal cord tumours, Pediatric Neurosurgery including Hydrocephalus, spina bifida and tethered cord, Craniosynostosis, Pediatric brain tumors, Surgery for intractable trigeminal neuralgia, etc., apart from Brain and Spine trauma surgery, Micro – Neurosurgery, Neuro-Endoscopic Surgery for Pituitary Tumors and CSF Leaks, Micro-surgical excision of aneurysm and aneurysms and vascular malformations, Endovascular Coiling of Aneurysms and Vascular Malformations, Surgery for Acute Head Injury and Spinal Injuries, Complex Spinal Surgeries & Minimal Access Spine Surgery, Surgery for Stroke Prevention, Vertebroplasty

The Department of Neurosurgery is a postgraduate teaching department having the 3-year M.Ch. (Neurosurgery) training program for post-M.S. (General Surgery) candidates. Besides this, M.S. (General Surgery), M.S. (Ortho), M.S. (ENT), M.S. (Ophthalmology) students are posted to the Department. The Department has regular clinical discussions, preoperative discussions, Journal club, interdepartmental meetings with Neurology and Radiology Departments, Departmental Audit, etc. The faculty and postgraduate students regularly participate in the city, regional and national Neurosurgical Conferences and regularly present papers.
