The Department of Pharmacology was established in 2005 and has progressed over the years with its devoted and experienced faculty imparting training to students as per the requirements of academia, research and industry.

The department is well equipped with facilities for research and teaching. The central animal house attached to the department of Pharmacology is registered with CPCSEA and is well maintained, under the care of a competent veterinary medical officer thereby facilitating animal research.

The department has well experienced, qualified and dynamic faculty.Five members of the teaching faculty have completed PhD while one is currently pursuing PhD. They are actively involved in imparting training to the undergraduate and postgraduate students while also focusing on innumerable research projects.

The enthusiastic faculty of this department have developed a documentary which demonstrates the method for obtaining informed consent from the potential research participants.

Students on the encouragement of the faculty have developed videos on how to take medications, Ill effects of alcoholism and on Organophosphorus Poisoning.

The Department of Pharmacology in CHRI offers courses catering to the needs of different UG programs (MBBS, BDS, Nursing, Allied health sciences) as well as conducts PG programs – PhD in Pharmacology, MD Pharmacology and M.Sc. in Clinical Research and Experimental Medicine taking into consideration the demand for qualified personnel in these fields.

The UG courses are offered since the inception of the Institute in 2006. M.Sc. Clinical Research & Experimental Medicine (M.Sc. CR & EM) commenced in the year 2008 and MD pharmacology in 2011.The postgraduate programs providea unique prospect to train in the basic, clinical and industry aspects of pharmacology. A key feature of our program is that it involves individual and collaborative learning experiences. Our academia – industry interaction facilitates acquisition of skills, knowledge, and experience in order to work in the pharmaceutical industry. More than 80 students have completed M.Sc. CR & EM and all are well placed in Clinical Research Organizations, hospitals and other organizations. Medical Postgraduates in pharmacology have been recruited in teaching medical institutions. Two of our alumni are entrepreneurs, having established their own Clinical Research Organizations

The major areas of research of the department include renal disease, autoimmune disorders,tuberculosis, diabetes, pharmacogenetics and evaluation of medicinal plants. Currently the department in collaboration with India Health Foundation(IHF), Hyderabad is pursuing the development of indigenous diagnostic kits, antibodiesand candidate vaccines for COVID-19. In addition, the faculty are conducting research on the various aspects of COVID-19.

The department has been sanctioned a research grant for Rs 1 Crore from the Ministry of Earth sciences, Govt. of India for coastal research. Another grant for Rs 5 lakhs has been received for herbal product clinical research.

The students and faculty have completed more than 100 research projects and published more than 60 research papers after the inception of the department

The department has organized many outreach programs on creating awareness on the ill effects of junk foodand also conducts programs to benefit school and college students on drug related issues.

Guest lecture – Anticancer drugs

The Guest Lecture was conducted by the Department of Pharmacology, CHRI on 11.12.2021. The speaker was Dr Manisha Bisht, Additional Professor, Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS, Rishikesh and Dr M.Duraivel, Asst. Professor of Pharmacology, CHRI was the coordinator of the event. The speaker discussed topics such as pathogenesis of cancer, cancer cell cycle, drugs used in cancer therapy in detail. After the lecture, the session was open for questions and discussion by the students. The speaker clarified the doubts of the participants. Around 210 participants attended the Guest lecture.
