Pulmonology

The department was established in 2005 and 5 batches (10 postgraduates) have passed out and working in well reputed medical colleges and hospitals. Undergraduate (MBBS), Postgraduate (MD Respiratory Medicine), BSc (Respiratory care technology) and M Sc (Integrated Respiratory care technology) courses and training are offered in the department.

The department has an excellentand appropriately balanced team of experienced faculty and
young residents which. These experienced team of pulmonologists are activelyinvolved in the
diagnosis, management and prevention of respiratory conditions in patients attending the
pulmonology OPD such as Ttuberculosis with well-established DOTS center and non-
Tuberculous diseases such as Obstructive lung disease including Bronchial asthma, COPD
and Bronchiectasis; Pneumonia, Environmental lung diseases, ILD, malignancies of the lung,
etc.

The Department provides outpatient services from 08:30 AM to 4:00 PM every day. On
holidays outpatient services are available from 8:30 AM to 02:00 PM This is offered by the
department include Outpatient services and Inpatient care. These experienced team of
pulmonologists are actively involved in the diagnosis management and prevention of
patients with respiratory conditions such astuberculosis, bronchial asthma, obstructive lung
disease, pneumonia, occupational lung diseases malignancies of the lung.

Undergraduate (MBBS), Postgraduate (MD Respiratory Medicine), BSc (Respiratory care technology) and M Sc (Integrated Respiratory care technology) courses and training are offered in the department.

Research- The department has faculty with rich experience in research and department has
undertaken scientific research. Faculty and student undergo frequent training in research
methodology. 48 research projects have been under taken by the department with 13 ongoing
research projects by both faculty and PGs and UGs (MBBS/AHS) with 35 completed projects.
UG and PG students were awarded ICMR and CARE funded projects. Our Faculty and students
have 24 publications in indexed journals including Scopus, Web of science, Index Copernicus
and Pubmed.

National TB Elimination program

Specialized Procedures

The department has experienced trained faculty and equipment to perform the following procedures

  • Spirometry
  • Video Assisted Bronchoscopy (BAL, Biopsy, etc.)
  • Pleural-Thoracocentesis, ICD insertion Pleurodesis
  • Skin Prick Testing for allergy profile
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • FeNO
  • CO breath Analyzer
  • Sleep Study are some of the state-of-the-art facilities offered by the department.
  • The department is equipped with high end equipment including Video Bronchoscopy, PFT (Spirometry, Vitalograph, Mini Wrights), DLCO, PEFR, Invasive mechanical ventilator, Non-Invasive mechanical ventilators (CPAP and BIPAP), Sleep lab and skin prick testing for allergy profile.

Inpatient care is provided in the 80 bedded male and female wards, Respiratory Intensive
Care Unit services, Private Rooms and Isolation ward for TB and MDR patients.

As part of community awareness and development program regular free camps and
community activities are organized by the department to take medical and specialist care to
places where there is shortage of medical facilities. Community based awareness programs
are held on occasions of world asthma, COPD day, World Tb day etc.

Our postgraduates have participated in various State, National and international including
ATS (American Thoracic Society) and ERS (European Respiratory Society) and have received
awards

CMEs, workshops, State and national conferences are organized by the department to be in touch with the ever-growing world of medical care. Guest lectures by well reputed national and international faculty are regularly organized by the department. Innovative teaching programs to adapt and incorporate science and technology into learning such through webinars, interdepartmental meets, Swayam courses (Manage TB/ Basics of Biomedical research) are few noteworthy to mention. A Certificate course on sleep medicine was conducted for state and national faculty and students in 2019. Sensitization programand Core Committee meetings on RNTCP done regularly for students and faculty to create awareness and update recent guidelines for optimal management of TB patients

Areas of focus in research include Tuberculosis, COPD, Anti TB drugs.
