Indian Nursing Council Norms

A.  Nursing Programs

Nursing Programs Training Duration
B. Sc (Basic) 4 years (including internship)
B.Sc (Post Basic) 2 years
M.Sc. Medical-Surgical Nursing (Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Nursing) 2 years

Eligibility Criteria

  • BSc. (N)

#      The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on OR before 31st December of the year in which admission is sought.
#     Minimum education:
#     10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 45% marks taken together in (PCB) at the qualifying examination i.e., (10+2) from recognized board under AISSE/ CBSE/ ICSE/ SSCE/ HSCE or other equivalent Board.
#     Student shall be medically fit.
#     Students appearing in 10+2 examinations in Science conducted by the National Institute of Open School with 45% marks.
#     Students shall be admitted once in a year.
#      The candidates belonging to SC/ ST or other backward classes, the marks obtained in PCB taken together in qualifying examination be 40%.

  • Post Basic B. Sc. (N)

#     Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university for this purpose. Those who have done 10+1 in or before 1986, will be eligible for admission.
#     Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R .N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained before the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in any one of the following areas:

  • O.T. Techniques
  • Ophthalmic Nursing
  • Leprosy Nursing
  • TB Nursing
  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Cancer Nursing
  • Orthopedic Nursing

#     Candidates shall be medically fit.
#     Students shall be admitted once in a year.

  • M. Sc. (N)

#     The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife of equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.
#     The minimum education requirements shall be the passing of B.Sc. Nursing/ B.Sc. Hons.
#     Nursing/ Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
#     The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing / B.Sc. Hons.
#     Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in an institution which is recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
#     Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
#     Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.

B. Staffing pattern from 2014-15 on-wards

The following qualification and experience for nursing faculty in the collegiate programme is prescribed for 2014 – 15 academic year and onwards.

  • Principal cum Professor– 15 years experience with M.Sc(N) out of which 12 years should be teaching experience with a minimum of 5 year s experience in collegiate programme.Ph.D(N) is desirable.
  • Vice – Principal cum Professor– 12 years experience with M.Sc(N) out of which 10 years should be teaching experience with a minimum of 5 years experience in collegiate programme.Ph.D(N) is desirable.
  • Professor – 10 years experience with M.Sc(N) out of which 7 years should be teaching experience.Ph.D(N) is desirable.
  • Associate Professor / Reader – M.Sc(N) with 8 years including 5 years of teaching experience.Ph.D(N) is desirable.
  • Assistant Professor / Lecturer – M.Sc(N) with 3 years of teaching experience. Ph.D. (N) is desirable.
  • Tutor / Clinical Instructor – M.Sc(N) or B.Sc(N) / P.B.B.Sc(N) with 1 year experience.
