After having qualified in the NEET UG and been allotted Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute as the place of study for the next 5 ½ years, the aspiring medical students will step into the campus with many apprehensions such as
- Is the medical curriculum very tough?
- Is a medico expected to study always?
- Will there be ragging in the campus?
- Will I get any free time at all?
- What has Chettinad got to offer for me?
You will definitely need to work harder than before, but the study period is interesting, enjoyable and highly rewarding. The trick of the trade is to organize your time between studies, sports and recreation and music. If you organize your time well, the undergraduate medical student life is the best time of your life.
First year in medical school is a transition from school to college and for many students, it may also mean staying away from home for the first time. But be assured that you are in a safe campus which is a home away from home. There are opportunities to make new friendships which last forever. Students also get an opportunity to interact with individuals from other states and different cultural backgrounds. CHRI is a ragging free campus and the students can have a healthy communication with the seniors without any trepidation.
The medical curriculum is competency based and the aspiring medical student should realise that the knowledge acquisition is not just for scoring marks in an examination, but that it forms a strong foundation of informationon which their medical career is built. They should develop the passion for lifelong learning. The faculty are well experienced, student friendly and are also assigned as student mentors. In addition, student counsellors are also available for consultation. LMS empowers the students to gain access to the lectures, from anywhere and at any time. The students have access to a vast library with an awe-inspiring array of books and journals
From the second year onwards, you will have to shuttle between clinical postings, theory and practical classes, internal assessments and university exams. One year of internship follows at the end of four and a half years of study and this is where the young resident is given hands on training in patient care and management
The teaching faculty of CHRI forms the backbone of this reputed institution. They are highly qualified, well experienced and dedicated to their profession. In addition to the didactic lectures, practical demonstrations, they use various innovative modalities of imparting knowledge to the students such as integrated teaching which has become a major part of the curriculum, small group discussions, bed side clinics, quizzes, participation in outreach activities, role play, problem-based learning.
This is another main activity that complements the teaching learning process at CHRI. Students are allotted faculty mentors whom they approach for advice on a personal note and with regard to academics. Research mentoring is also encouraged
Students interested in research can apply for ICMR STS projects, guided by a faculty mentor. Students will have the opportunity to prepare and present papers on their research activities in national and international conferences. They are also encouraged toenroll for various value-added programs which will help them develop their skills in associated turfs.
Community outreach programs play a vital role in improving and extending the reach of health care through activities such as education on health and hygiene, basic screening of the health of the community, management of clinical cases and simultaneously provision of facilities to access the hospital services. Through these activities the health outcomes of the individuals and of the community can be improved.
It also provides an opportunity to hand back to the society from which we have gained a lot. Our extension activities provide greater interface with society through field and service-related programs. Commitment to society by CHRI is well exemplified by the health promotion activities in the villages adopted and collaboration with government and NGO in health initiatives in these villages.
All this has been possible through the dynamic participation of faculty, students and NSS volunteers, making them good citizens with societal commitment and empathy.
When academics saturates your minds, you can turn to sports not only to divert your minds but also to encourage good health and inculcate the spirit of competition. The campus boasts of state-of-the-art indoor badminton court, basketball court, tennis court, a synthetic track for athletics, a kabaddi and volleyball ground as well. We have a mini football and cricket field in addition to an area for indoor sports like Table Tennis, Chess and Carom.
Amidst all the surrounding greenery, giving the surreal feeling of being far from the hustle bustle of a city, stands the grand Sigapi Achi Convention Centre with its unique architectural design and capacity of over a thousand people, where movies are screened. For more suitable events, a mini-auditorium is available within the administrative building where CMEs and other conferences are conducted.CARE organizes inter collegiate sports and cultural events IGNIS and FUSION and intra collegiate culturals CHET FEST on a regular basis and during these events, the students are given an opportunity to display their organizational, artistic and theatrical skills. They are also encouraged to participate in various events
The highlight of the campus are the security measures, with over 200 closed circuit cameras installed and constantly patrolling guards, ours is probably the safest campus there could be. Security measures are in place in the hostels too. Hostels are equipped with a laundry and gym facilities, as well as spacious seating areas for breakfast/lunch or dinner. The girls’ hostel, has a cozy reading room while the boys’ hostel has a Volley ball court, Badminton court, fully air-conditioned Table Tennis room and swimming pool where they may hone their talents.
