On this occasion, we as a Psychiatry department united to conduct a “WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS PROGRAM on 9TH September 2023 by doing awareness campaigning and distributing ribbons to hospital staffs. We conducted an awareness rally by the students near the hospital campus. We Gathered a group of general population and created awareness regarding the risk factors, complications, death rates across the world due to suicide, hotline numbers available and also about the treatment options available to prevent suicide were explained to over 75 participants with Awareness stand and Awareness talk by experienced set of professionals from the department of psychiatry. Welcome note was given by Dr.Kailash, Awareness talk was given by Dr. Kailash, Dr.Sobia and Dr.Vignesh.

WORLD ORGAN DONATION DAY-2022

The program started with Welcome address ,which was given by Dr. Senthil Kumar K., Professor Department of General Surgery, organising chairperson. The program was inaugurated by Dr.Jaishree Vasudevan, Prof & HOD Department of Paediatrics, Dr. Rajasekaran , Prof & HOD, Department of ENT and Dr R Anantharamakrishnan Professor and HOD ,Department of General Surgery. MORNING SESSION ( 10am to 12.30 am) A brief introduction on organ donation was given by Dr, Jaistri Senior Resident, Department of General Surgery. This was followed by an awareness program on Skin donation by Dr. Dinesh Kumar MS.,McH Plastic surgery, Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery. Dr. (Maj.) Premnath G. Professor Department of Ophthalmology spoke on the topic “Donate Eyes – Gift a Sight”.The sessions were attended by faculty of General Surgery,postgraduates,crri s and faculty,postgraduates from ophthalmology and ENT.Public awareness was given to the patients who also participated in the session.After Brief lunch break, the afternoon session was started. AFTERNOON SESSION ( 1.30 to 4 pm) Guest lecture on, “Current concepts in Renal Transplant” was delivered by Dr. Muruganandham, Senior consultant and Head, Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, Gleneagles Global Health City. Dr. Pradeep Anand, faculty and Assist. Professor, Institute of Cardiovascular and Thorasic surgery, RGGGH and MMC, spoke on “Cardiac Transplant- An Overview”. The winners of Poster and Poetry competition were announced.In poster competition the First prize was awarded to Ms.Mrilani,MBBS 2017 batch, second prize – Ms.Ashlin Xavier,B pharm 4th year,third prize – Aishwarya D,Ahs intern.In poetry competition first prize was won by Ms.Muthulakshmi N,BPT 2nd year. The event was concluded by vote of thanks given by Dr. Harsha S. Narayanan, Assistant Professor ,Department of General Surgery . SUMMARY The overall event was a great success with two speakers from CHRI, and two eminent Guest speakers, creating awareness and providing insights on various organ donations, its technical aspects and the recent advancements in organ transplantation. The feedback received from faculties and post graduates was excellent.

8th International day of yoga 2022 has celebrated at Chettinad Academy of Research & Education at Kelambakkam on 21.06.2022. Prof. Dr. Shantha Ravisankar, Vice-Chancellor of CARE inaugurated the Yoga for Humanity program on the occasion of International day of yoga. Dr. Yuva Dayalan, Founder & Director of Yuvaa Yoga was the special guest on this yoga program and trained all the students & staff members. Dr. Kirubalan Dy. Director, Department of Physical Education & Dr. Sanjay Andrew Department of Physiology organized and coordinated the yoga program.

CHETPATHCON-2022

Department of Pathology, Chettinad hospital and Research Institute conducted anInternational CME titled “CHETPATHCON 2022 –SOFT TISSUE TUMOURS DIAGNOSTIC UPDATES” under the auspices of TNPCIAPM on 11-6-2022. The CME was Virtual with 226 registrations .The welcome address was given by Organizing ChairpersonDr.Vijayashree Raghavan, HOD of Pathology followed by talk by our Dean Dr.Pitchai Balashanmugam, Dr.Chandramouleeswari, Secretary of TNPCIAPM and Dr,Sandhya Sundaram, President of TNPCIAPM .Inaugural address was given by Honorable Vice Chancellor, CARE,Prof. Dr. Shantha Ravishankar. The first talk was by our International speaker, Dr.PaariMurugan who is the Associate Professor,Urologic &Orthopedic Pathology,Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, Minnesota University. Also he is the Medical Director, Biorepository & Laboratory Services, University of Minnesota,Minneapolis,USAon the topic “CHALLENGING SOFT TISSUE TUMOURS:CASE STUDIES”. He explained various challenging cases with differential diagnosis and molecular genetics. The second talk was on APPROACH TO SOFT TISSUE TUMOURSby Dr.Chandramouleeswari,Professor and Head,Central Laboratory, TNGMSSH.She explained the approach to soft tissue tumors starting from morphology to molecular genetics. The third session was a Quiz Contest conducted by Dr. Femela.M,Professor, Department of Pathology, CHRI.Dr.Navya.P.T was the quiz scorer,Dr.Nivetha.S, quiz coordinator.Eight teams participated, the First place was secured by Pathology Post Graduates of Chettinad Academy of Research and Education,Second place by Government Medical College,Thiruvananthapuram. The final session was by Prof. Dr.S.Rajendiran, from South Carolina, Visiting Professor of Pathology, SRIHER, Chennai on the topic “ Updates on Soft tissue Tumours”.He elucidated the Updates on Soft tissue Tumours including the recent WHO classification with various case scenarios. Overall, the CME enlightened the delegates on the Soft Tissue Tumor Updates and the conduct of the CME was praised by delegates through their feedback and their interaction with the speakers.

Live Webinar on “Medicinal Plants of India and their future prespective’’ with special reference to the state of Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh

The online webinar was conducted on the topic “Medicinal Plants of India and their future prespective’’ with special reference to the state of Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh. The presentation by Dr. Hemant Kumar Gupta (Ex. IFS Officer) and Dr. Sher Singh Samant (Director, Himalayan Forest Research Institute) on the topics ‘Healing Plants of India’ and ‘Medicinal Plants of North West Himalayas’ was given. 42 participants from Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu joined through zoom link to the webinar while students and faculty members joined the webinar from the lecture halls. The goal of the webinar was to motivate participants, students and faculty mermbers to conduct more research on Indian plant species and exploit their medicinal potential. It was an effort to inspire the participants to converge the ancient Ayurvedic science to the modern medical science through the scientific approach. Despite these advances, ancient Indian medical science(Ayurveda) continues to lag behind and efforts are required to exploit the potential of medicinal plant species by scientific approach by making scientific data available to the world. Additionally, they emphasised the need of promoting innovation and invention in Ayurvedic science. It was an informative and interactive session which drawn the attention of participants towards inherent medicinal plant species of India.

Two Days Workshop on ‘FIRST AID - A BASIC LIFE-SAVING SKILLS’

A two-day hands on workshop on ‘First aid - A basic life-saving skills’ was organized by Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CSPS) in collaboration with Chettinad College of Nursing (CCN), Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) on 18th and 19th March 2022. The first day of the workshop was initiated by a welcome note by Prof. Dr. Hepsibah Sharmil, Principal, Chettinad College of Nursing followed by Dr.K.Lakshmi, Dean i/c, Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. First Session was delivered by Mr. Venkatesan A, HOD of Medical Surgical Nursing, CCN on the basic first aid aspects such as CPR, first aid for chocking, types of wounds and bleeding and first aid box. Second Session was delivered by Ms. Grace Pal, Nursing Tutor, CCN on first aid for burns, snake bites, poisoning, drowning, fainting and unconsciousness. Mr. Arunraj M, Resuscitation and Simulation Educator, CCN gave a detailed lecture on the basic life saving skills for adults, children and infants. On day two of the workshop, all the students were divided into three batches for the hands-on demonstration in the ‘Skills Lab’ located in the second floor. All the students were given hands-on experience on dressing the wound, applying different types of bandages, splinting the injured body part, heimlich maneuvre for chocking, providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and transferring the victim by using mannequines. An active and enthusiatic participation was observed among students and they have gained confidence to meet the emergency situations. About 57 first year B.Pharmacy students participated in this workshop and are highly benefitted. The event was organised and coordinated by Dr.S.Brito Raj, Associate Professor of Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, CARE.

WORKSHOP ON SUBTENON ANAESTHESIA

A workshop was organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, CHRI on Subtenon Anaesthesia on 15.12.21. The coordinator was Dr.C. Shankar, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology,CHRI. The speaker was Dr Senthil K Vijayan, Consultant Anaesthetist, NHS, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.Peribulbar anaesthesiais the commonest technique followed in India for eye surgeries, but it has got its inherent disadvantages in beginners. Subtenons anaesthesia is a safe procedure for eye surgeries and is not commonly practised as it is cumbersome. The workshop was organized for postgraduates and faculty to learn the technique of Subtenons anaesthesia. Dr Senthil.K.Vijayan gave a detailed demonstration of the procedure in ophthalmology OT. A total of 25 participants attended the workshop.

SARS COV2 Variants and their Importance Globally

The weekly CME, of CHRI, was conducted by the Medical Education Unit of Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute on 29.10.21 on the topic ‘SARS COV2 Variants and its Importance Globally’. The speaker was Dr Kruthika P - Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute (CHRI).The speaker discussed the SARS COV2 variants of viruses that were currently prevalent, the characteristics, the specific properties of the SARS COV2 variants of the coronavirus, prevalence of infection and the incidence of mortality. The speaker further discussed the system employed by the WHO in the nomenclature of the SARS COVID 2 variants of viruses such as. B.1.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1 & B.1.617.TeachingFacultyand Postgraduates of CHRI attended the CME.

World Stroke Day 2021 – Awareness campon stroke prevention

A Chettinad School of Physiotherapy, CARE and PMR department, CHRI jointly organized an awareness camp on behalf of World Stroke Day 2021on 29.10.2021. Dr C. Ramesh, Head of the PMR Department / Sports Medicine, CHRI, inaugurated the camp. Ms Gayathri. K. C, Assistant Professor, Chettinad School of Physiotherapy, CARE, Kelambakkam, Chennai and Mr Haribabu. L Senior Physiotherapist, PMR department, CHRI, CARE, Chennai were the organisers of the camp. Patients attending the outpatient department were assessed via the questionnaire form. Health advice on exercise for the prevention of co-morbidities and stroke-related problems. A total of 20 patients attended the camp and benefitted.

Clean India Campaign-2021

The Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India envisages the country Clean with the theme ‘Clean India’ for October 2021. The NSS, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education commemorated by conducting a Door to Door waste collection campaign at Thaiyur village, Chengalpet District on 28.10.21.A total of 20 NSS volunteers and students, faculty CARE participated in this event. Mrs Yaga Jeyanthi, NSS, Programme Officer, CARE along with Dr Koyeli Girigoswami, Associate Professor, FAHS, CHRI and NSS and UBA coordinator organised the event. Plastic and non-degradable wastes from houses were collected in a cloth bag and discarded in a panchayat dustbin.

Guest Lecture- Antifungal drugs

A Guest lecture was organized by the Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute on 28.10.2021 on ‘Antifungal drugs’. The speaker was Dr Rajani Patil, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences, Gadag, Karnataka and the Moderator was Dr Anu M, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology, CHRI. The speaker discussed mucormycosis, drug treatment, mechanism of actions of various groups of drugs used against fungi, their adverse effects and preferred first-line agents of other fungal infections. The treatment guideline for mucormycosis was discussed. One hundred eighty-eight participants attended this guest lecture.

NIV WORKSHOP -2021

The Department of Respiratory Medicine, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute conducted a Hands-on Workshop on “Non-Invasive Ventilation” on 28.10.2021. The resource persons were the faculty of the Department of Respiratory Medicine. The topics dealt with were indications, contraindications, physiology, interfaces, settings, different modes, troubleshooting, monitoring in patients and different types of mask, circuits, humidification and usage in critical care settings. The lecture was followed by a workshop with hands-on training on non-invasive ventilation such as Bi-PAP, CPAP, AVAPS and its interfaces. All the Faculty, Postgraduates and AHS from our Institute and postgraduates from Balaji Medical College and Sathya sai Medical Colleges participated in this workshop.

BLS (Basic Life Support) Workshop

Department of Anaesthesiology organized a workshop for Allied Health Science students on Basic Life support (BLS) on 27.10.2021 at the skills lab, CARE. The resource persons were Dr Merlin Shalini Ruth, Professor, Dr Swaminathan - Assistant Professor, and Dr Gopinath, Dr Anusha Ben, Dr Lakshmi Krishna.S, postgraduates, Department of Anaesthesiology. Following the lecture and demonstration, a post-class test was conducted to assess the understanding and knowledge gained by the participants. All the participants were trained in emergency airway management and all practised CPR on the mannequin. The total number of participants was 50.

Poster competition on World Polio Day

The Department of Paediatrics, CHRI in association with the Indian Medical Association- Medical Student Network- CHRI unit organized an E-Poster competition on the occasion of World Polio Day celebrated on 24.10.2021. The theme of this competition was ‘Polio Eradication and Polio Vaccine- The End Game’. Students from all medical colleges in the South zone were invited. Students were allowed to take part individually or in pairs. A total of 126 entries were made out of which 14 entries were from students of other institutions and 112 entries were from Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute. The posters were judged by Dr Sujatha Sridharan, Dr Kathir Subramanian, Dr Jaishree Vasudevan and Dr Rajkumar. The prizes were given to Alinawaz Khan –Siddhavanhalli Nijalingappa Medical College, Karnataka (1st ), M.Nithyasri - Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research (2nd ) and Sneha Ananya & Sameeha - Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute (3rd ) and Anwar Basha & Bhavna V - Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute (4th ).The cash prizes of Rs 2500,1500 and 1000 were given to the winners of the top three positions respectively.

World Polio Day 2021

World Polio Day was commemorated by the Department of Pediatrics on 22.10.21. A guest lecture was organised and the speaker was Dr Surendhiran, WHO Surveillance Medical Officer, Chennai. The speaker discussed the current polio situation in the world and how there has been an expansion in the surveillance sites, mitigation measures as well as TN surveillance system 2021. He also discussed in detail the AFP/ Measles weekly reporting and other Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance. There was an interactive session, where questions raised by the students were clarified by the speaker. A total of 148 participants attended the guest lecture.

Global Handwashing Day

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI organized a guest lecture and workshop to commemorate Global handwashing day on Hand hygiene on 18.10.21. A poster competition was also conducted to demonstrate the importance of Hand Hygiene. The guest speaker was Dr Rachna Dave PhD, CEO of Microgo.She highlighted the importance of hand hygiene and the steps of handwashing. She also interacted with the students who are the participants of the lecture. She demonstrated an equipment used to monitor hand hygiene compliance. Plates inoculated with the hands of staff before and after handwashing were demonstrated. The poster competition was participated by more than 20 students and the competition was judged by Dr Rachna Dave and Dr Nirupa, Professor of Microbiology.

Outreach activity

The Department of Microbiology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, in collaboration with Simple Trust, organized an outreach program for the underprivileged school-going children of Aadhanur Village in Padappai. 0n 16.10.21.The team consisted of Dr Priyadarshini, Dr Alice Peace, Dr John Maria Louis and Dr Sathyakamala.The team educated the primary school children on the importance of personal hygiene, hand hygiene and the correct procedure of hand washing was demonstrated to them. The children were also made to practice the procedure. Information on the Covid 19 pandemic and the preventive measures were also taught to the students. Personal hygiene kits comprising of Masks, hand sanitisers, toothpaste, toothbrushes and soaps sponsored Lab Care Enterprises were also distributed to the students. A total of 15 children attended the outreach program.

Guest Lecture - Acute Kidney Injury

Department of Biochemistry, CARE organized e guest lecture on ‘Acute Kidney Injury’ on 13.10.2021. The program started with a welcome address by DrSumathy.S, Professor and Head of the department following which Dr Anuradha.G, Professor, Department of biochemistry introduced the speaker. The speaker was Dr Jayalakshmi.S, Senior consultant and Professor of Nephrology, Tamilnadu government multi-superspeciality hospital, Omandurar estate, Chennai. The speaker gave an elaborate lecture on evaluation, presentation and management of acute kidney injury. She also discussed recent biomarkers for diagnosing acute kidney injury. There were more than 25 participants including staff, faculty and postgraduates.

Bronchoscopy guided Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy - a difficult and unique surgical intervention done at the bedside, GICU,CHRI

A 58-year-old male patient with an alleged history of OPC poisoning was admitted to Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute on 13.10.21. The patient required prolonged ventilator support and had twice failed the weaning trial. Given the difficulty in weaning, Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy was done at the bedside in ICU and the position of the guidewire (A) and tracheostomy tube(B) was confirmed by bronchoscopy. The procedure was uneventful and the patient recovered well following the procedure. Early Tracheostomy was considered in this patient due to prolonged mechanical ventilation support and are expected to have a meaningful recovery. Tracheostomy decreased the need for sedation and facilitated weaning from a ventilator. The patient was discharged after complete recovery. This approach was associated with fewer bleeding complications than open tracheostomy. The patient received the care under Dr R. Swaminathan Veerasamy, Prof. Anand, Prof. Merlin Shalini Ruth, Dr Afreen, Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care.

International Webinar Series On HIV

The second webinar of the CARE – ART webinar series was hosted on 13.10.2021 by the ART centre, CHRI. The session was chaired by Dr Mayilananthi K and the resource person was Dr Velpandi Ayyavoo, PhD, Professor & Graduate Programs Director, Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, University of Pittsburgh. The speaker was on ‘HIV - Virus, Variants and Virulence’. She shared her experience about “ The Berlin Patient”, Timothy Brown, who is the first HIV cured patient following a bone marrow transplant from a CCR5delta 32 variant donor. The speaker highlighted the future of HIV vaccines and their role in the prevention of HIV. The webinar was attended by more than 300 participants- consultants from various departments of CHRI, delegates from various medical colleges of the country and University of Pittsburgh and undergraduate as well as postgraduate medical students.

The Department of Biochemistry conducted an e CME on 'Revisit Gene expression and techniques' on 9.10.2021. Dr Sumathy.S Prof &HOD, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI, gave the welcome address. The eminent speakers for the event were Dr Sagar Dholariya Jayantilal, Assistant Professor,Department of Biochemistry,AIIMS Rajkot and Dr Veerabadra goud, Associate Professor and HOD in-charge, Department of Biochemistry,ANIIMS,Port Blair. Dr Sagar discussed the regulation of gene expression.He covered the prokaryotic gene regulation where he explained about lac operon model of gene expression.He also gave an insight into the various methods of eukaryotic gene regulation at the transcription and genetic levels.Dr Veerabadra discussed 'Blotting techniques and PCR'.He described in detail the various blotting techniques such as Northern blotting,Southern Blotting,Western Blotting and Dot blotting.He also discussed theprocedure and significance of Polymerase chain reaction,emphasizing the role of PCR in the present pandemic and the use of RT -PCR in covid testing.The vote of thanks was given by the organizing secretary Dr Santhini Gopalakrishnan.S, Associate Professor,Department of Biochemistry,CHRI.

Cme On Highways Of The Brain And The Story Of The Toll Gates

The Department of Anatomy, CHRI, conducted a CME on the topic ‘Highways of the brain and the story of the toll gates’ on 9.10.2021. The esteemed speaker was introduced by the organising secretary Dr Rajila, Professor & Head, Department of Anatomy, CHRI. The speaker was Dr R Lakshmi Narasimhan, Professor and Director, Department of Neurology, Madras medical college, Chennai. The speaker started each case with a case history with videos depicting the eye movements of each lesion. He discussed the classification as Intra axial or extra-axial and dorsal or ventral, making the diagnosis. A total of 232participants attended the CME.

Pharmacotherapy of pulmonary Tuberculosis

The Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute organized an E-Guest lecture on 09.10.2021 on the topic ‘Pharmacotherapy of pulmonary Tuberculosis’. The speaker was Dr Savolu Sharon Sonia, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The Moderator was Dr Vivek Valliappan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology, CHRI. The speaker discussed the basics of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, drugs and their mechanism and their uses. She also spoke on the recent advancements in the treatment of tuberculosis for the benefit of students. A total of 78 participants attended this guest lecture. MBBS students, MD Pharmacology Postgraduates and faculty of the Department of Pharmacology attended the guest lecture.

World Mental Health Day 2021

The Department of Psychiatry, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education conducted an Online Symposium on ‘District Mental Health Programme: Framework & Approach’ commemorating World Mental Health Day 2021 on 8.10.2021.Dr.Shabeeba Z.Kailash, Assistant Professorwas the Organizing Secretary and the Organizing Committee was led by DrSabari Sridhar O.T, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatryconducted this online symposium.The resource persons were DrP.Poorna Chandrika, Director of IMH Chennai and the State Nodal Officer of Tamilnadu DMHP and DrR.KarthikDeivanayagam, District Psychiatrist-Program Officer, DMHP Pudukkottai.The session started with DrShabeebaZ.Kailash, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, CHRI giving introductory remarks about this year’s World Mental Health Day 2021’s theme ‘Mental Health in an Unequal world’ and the rising need for effective implementation of National and District mental health programme in the current day scenario. The 1st session was by DrP.Poorna Chandrika, who gave a broad overview of DMHP and explaining about all the steps taken at the state level to improve the mental health of all at the taluk and PHCs. DrR.KarthikDeivanayagamdiscussed the in-field scenario about the role of a psychiatrist in DMHP and the opportunities and challenges we face and also how to overcome them. At the end of each session, we had brief interactive discussions with participants. Then the event was closed with a valedictory note by DrKailash.S, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, CHRI.Total registrationsof the symposium were 120 practising psychiatrists, other mental health professionals as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students from all over India. Both the scientific sessions were attended by 90 delegates.

CME: Integrating osteology with forensic medicine

A CME was organized by the Department of Anatomy, CHRI on 08.10.21 on Integrating Osteology with Forensic medicine. The organising secretary was Dr Sudakshina Chakrabarti Associate professor of Anatomy, CHRI and the guest speaker was Dr Anju Rani Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of Government Medical Institute of Medical Sciences Greater Noida. The program was conducted the for first MBBS students of Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute to give them a better understanding of the importance of learning osteology during their first-year MBBS in Anatomy curriculum. The speaker is an expert in Forensic Osteology and gave her opinion and views in multiple cases to nab criminals by determining the gender of the victim, time since death, mode of death, age of victim on examining osteology remains thus providing justice to conviction in innumerable occasions. She gave a detailed explanation on how forensic osteological examination helps in identifying the mode of death and also aids in concluding the way the dead body was handled after death to hide offences. The importance of osteological examination was also insisted. The session was highly interesting and interactive.

Workshop on Pre & Post Test Counseling for HIV

A workshop was organized by the Department of Microbiology, CHRI from 4.10.2021 to 5.10.2021 on Pre & Post Test Counseling for HIV. The Resource Person was Dr Santhosh Clement, MSW, PhD. National Trainer, NACO & NBTC, Department of Psychiatry, CMC Vellore. The total number of participants trained was 25.The resource person started the session with a brief introduction on HIV then proceeded to discuss in detail counselling, the qualities of a good counsellor and the essential communication skills. The importance of values and attitudes of counsellors to be followed were also discussed. Then the participants were made to enact role plays for risk assessment (Antenatal cases, IV drug abuse, Homosexual individuals and sex worker). The speaker also gave an elaborative lecture on risk assessment. Role-plays were enacted for pretest counselling followed by an explanation of pretest counselling by the speaker and role-plays on posttest counselling and ethics with 3 simulated situations. The last session was a group activity that encompassed vital topics such as anxiety, depression and denial. The queries were clarified by the speaker.

A guest lecture was organized by the Department of Microbiology,CHRI on the topic ‘Ocular Infections- Clinical features and Laboratory diagnosis’ on 02.10.2021. The resource person was DrSuganeswariG, Senior Consultant Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, SankaraNethralaya, Chennai. The speaker discussed the anatomy of the eye and the various ocular infections. The speaker discussed her clinical experience with interesting and illustrative pictures. The speaker also gave an outline of the various recent diagnostic modalities in intraocular infections. The lecture was attended by faculty and students of CHRI. The students interacted with the speaker at the end of the guest lecture. A total of 180 participants attended the lecture.

Weekly CME was organized by the Medical Education unit of Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute on 01.10.21 on the topic ‘Organophosphorus Compound Poisoning.’The speaker was Dr S Selvamani - Professor: Department of General Medicine– Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute (CHRI).The speaker began the session with an introduction on organophosphorus compounds classifying them and mentioning their general properties. He further discussed updates on acute organophosphorus poisoning was put forward with a mention of its incidence, diagnosis, clinical presentation and medical management.The neurological complications associated with organophosphorus poisoning andevidence-based cases of organophosphorus poisoning were also discussed. There was an interactive discussion on the topic at the end of the CME.

The Department of Community Medicine, CHRI, CARE has organised an online conference on “Rabies: Facts, Not Fear” to commemorate world rabies day on 29.09.2021. The conference was conducted in collaboration with the Association for Prevention and Control of Rabies in India (APCRI). The speakers were DrSumit Poddar, Dr Ravish HS, Dr Harish BR, DrSheela Haveri, DrAshwath Narayana.The topics discussed were Epidemiology of animal bites, Post Exposure prophylaxis (PEP), Rabies and FAQs about rabies vaccine and COVID scenarios, Intradermalabies vaccine (IDRV), Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), National Rabies Control Program (NRCP). Postgraduates and faculty from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Northern states have presented scientifically14 participants had presented oral paper presentations, and 8 participantshavepresented the posters.Two winners frothem poster presentation and Three winners from the oral presentationhave been announced. A total of 285 participants attended the conference.

Chettinad Volleyball Premier League 2021 (Men & Women)

Chettinad Volleyball Premier League 2021 was conducted at our Chettinad health city campus on 29.09.2021. DrNirupa, Department of Microbiology inaugurated the tournament in presence of DrRajesh kanna, Department of Pathology & DrKirubalan, Department of Physical Education.Theevent was a league tournament where there were divided into 2 pools with three teams in each and the top two teams from each pool went on to the semifinals. Semifinals men's section was held between MBBS A vs BDS, NURSING vs AHS and the Semifinals women section was held between MBBS A vs AHS B, B.Pharm/B.PT vs AHS A. The finals were held on 1st October between MBBS A vs Nursing, where the Nursing team emerged as the winners in the men section and the Women section between MBBS A vs AHS, where the MBBS team emerged as winners NaniaNanda Kumar from the Nursing team was announced to be the best player of the finals & Khalid Ahamed from the MBBS team was announced to be the best player of the tournament for the men section.Gayathri from the MBBS team was announced to be the best player of the tournament for the women section.DrEbenezer, Principal, FAHS, Dr John Antony Prabhakaran, Dept of Surgery, Dr Rajeshkanna, Department of Pathology, Dr Premkumar, Department of Dermatology graced the event with their presence and distributed the awards and medals to the winners.

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Acuteand chronic Meningitis- Laboratory diagnosis’ on 28.09.21. The guest speaker was Dr Nagarathna S, Additional Professor, Department of Neuro microbiology, NIMHANS, Bangalore. The speaker discussed causative agents of acute and chronic meningitis, the lab diagnosis, importance of CSF Examination. Automated techniques for CSF culture such as Bactec, Biofire, MALDITOF and blood culture were also discussed. Related cases scenario were discussed. The session ended with a question and answer session. A total of 120 participants attended the guest lecture.

The Department Of General Surgery, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute conducted a workshop on suturing skills for CRRI and PGs on 28.09.21. The participants were CRRIs ofthe Department of General Surgery, Department of Paediatrics and PGs of the Department of General Surgery who attended the works. The guest speaker delivered a lecture on “Basics Of Suturing” and imparted knowledge to the CRRI and Postgraduate students who attended the workshop. A hands-on workshop was conducted with various suturing kits and Hand knotspractising kits, organised by the Ethicon team. Demonstration of the suturing techniques and Hand knot skills were done by the faculties of the Department of General Surgery. A well-participated Quiz contest on Basics of Suturing was conducted at the end and the participants were awarded certificates.

International webinar series on HIV was organised by the ART centre of CHRI. The first webinar of the series was on the topic ‘Past, present and future of the HIV epidemic’ were held on 28.09.2021. The guest speaker was Dr Sheela Godbole, Professor and Head, Division of Epidemiology, National AIDS Research Institute, Pune. The session was chaired and coordinated by Dr Mayilananthi K. The speaker discussed her very vast experience in the field of HIV and she also discussed India’s goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030. She also discussed the role of medications and counselling in HIV positive patients. The webinar was attended by200 registered participants from various medical colleges and hospitals all over the country.

NSS DAY CELEBRATION

NSS team of CARE celebrated the NSS Day celebration on 24.09.21. The event started with the Inaugural Speech of the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr T Balasubramanian, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education. Dr Koyeli Girigoswami NSS PO, CARE, presented the last year NSS activities and the certificates were issued for the Unit 1 and Unit 2 volunteers by the chief guest. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute commemorated World Deafness Dayon 23.09.21. Various eventssuch as camp, rally,guest lecture and poster competitions were organized by the department. The Eventswere organized byDr.S. Rajasekaran, Dr. K. Priya, Dr. R.B. NamasivayaNavin and Dr. K. Gowthame. Free consultation with hearing assessment was done for more than 25 patients. A guest lecture was tendered by the guest speaker Dr M.K Rajasekar, Professor & HOD from Sri Balaji Medical College & Hospital on the topic ‘Challenging perceptions of the hearing loss and deafness in our community. The second guest lecture was by Dr.T. Balasubramanian, Registrar, DDrM.G.R Educational & Research Institute, Madhuravoyal, on the topic ‘Promoting the positive aspects of deafness, encouraging social inclusion & awareness of National Programme that supports deaf people’.Faculties, PGs, CRRI of the Department of ENT along with MBBS students participated in the rally within the CHRI campus. A poster competition was conducted on the theme‘Hearing care fall’, for the M.B.B.S students. Winners of the competition were given prizes.

Chettinad Basketball Premier League 2021

Chettinad Basketball Premier League 2021 was held at our Basketball court which started on 30th August 2021. Dr John Antony Prabhakaran of the Department of General Surgery Inaugurated the tournament in presence of Dr Rajesh Kanna, Department of Pathology & Dr Kirubalan, Department of Physical Education. It was held between eight teams of various batches. It was a league tournament where the eight teams were divided into 2 pools with four teams in each pool. Matches were held between teams of each pool and the top two teams were selected for the semifinals. The finals match was held on 21.09.21 between MBBS 2nd year team A vs MBBS INTERNS where the CRRIs team won the tournament. Dr Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, CARE graced the event with his presence and distributed the awards and medals to the respective winners.

The Department of Psychiatry conducted a seminar on the commemoration of ‘World Suicide Prevention Day on 09.09.21. The organising secretary was MS. Sri Janani Vasanth, Department of Psychiatry, CHRI. The speaker for the event was Dr NihaRumaisa, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry, CHRI. The speaker discussedthe various risk factors, warning signs and preventive measures for people having suicidal ideations. The session was followed by an interactive discussion with the participants. The Department of Physiology, CHRI, celebrated ‘International Literacy Day’ by organizing contests on the theme “Importance of Literacy” on 08.09.21.The coordinator of the events, Mrs Savitha Niren, Assistant Professor, ensured the widespread awareness of the slogan writing contest and the poster making contest amongst all the undergraduate students of CARE.About 90 students of various disciplines participated in the contests with great enthusiasm and submitted their work in English and Tamil.The winners of the poster contest wereMr Balaji and MsSwarnamughi who are currently pursuing B.Sc. An E- guest lecture was organized by the Department of Microbiology on the topic ‘Advancement of Multiparametric Flowcytometry in Research and Vaccine Development’ on 07.09.2021. The resource person was Dr. Siva Sankaran MP, Senior Research Scientist, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. The speaker gave an overview on the basics of flow cytometry, parts of flow cytometry and applications of flow cytometry in research and diagnosis like immunophenotyping, cell sorting, cell proliferation, cell cycle analysis, nucleic acid analysis, apotosis, etc. The speaker also shared his research experience in the development of HIV vaccine trial and COVID 19 vaccine. The program was attended by a total of 75 participants- faculty, research scholars, post graduates of CHRI and from other institutes.

The theme for this year’s Shikshak Parv is ‘Quality and Sustainable Schools: Learnings from the Schools in India’. The NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Unit of Chettinad Academy of Research and Education, Kelambakkam, Tamilnadu (AISHE Code-U0451) commemorated Shikshak Parv Celebration on 07.09.21.Live Inaugural Conclave was screened in which the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India has delivered the lecture. Role Play- What Does It Mean To Be a Family Member Of A Sick Patient

The Department of Pathology, CHRI organized a role-play event based on AETCOM Module No. 2.8 on the topic ‘What does it mean to be Family Member of a Sick Patient’ on 04.09.21. Theobjective was to understand and emphasize the importance of empathy in health care. The event was coordinated by Dr Vijayashree,Professor and Head,Department of Pathology, CHRI and The guest was DrVinu, Assistant Professor, Department of General Medicine, CHRI. The play was enacted by 2 teams. One team enacting the positive effect of empathy in patient care and the other on the negative effect due to the absence of empathy on patient care. The role play was performed with realistic actions and each team brought out the real aspects of empathy. The points insisted were ‘Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feeling of another, ‘Until u walk in another man's shoe you can't imagine the smell’ and ‘Doctor's communication with empathy has brought out Advance Humanism in Health Care’. There were a total of 220 participants who attended the program.

National nutrition week celebration 2021

The Department Of Paediatrics, CHRI celebrated national nutrition week during the first week of September.The events conducted this week were poster presentation, Quiz on Nutrition, low-cost nutrition food exhibition and distribution of nutrition kits, Outreach programme, Nutritional counsellingto the parents and expectant mothers and various guest lectures. Nutrition Week celebration began with the inaugural address given by Dr L.Umadevi, Head, Department of Pediatrics. She highlighted the importance of the Nutrition week celebration and its theme – Feeding smart, right from the start which was followed by DrRajkumar, elaborating the details of the programme and sharing his knowledge on Nutrition. A poster presentation was conducted for Nursing students / CRRIs and AHS on the theme ‘Feeding smart right from start’.A quiz on Nutrition was conducted by Dr G Kannanfor Postgraduates with active participation from MD studentsand MSc Nursing.An exhibition of low-cost nutrition food and distribution of nutrition kits was displayed. An Online Lecture was provided to Nursing students on the theme of Nutrition week via the Zoom platform. Nutritional counsellingto the parents and expectant mothers in the antenatal wards and mothers at postnatal wards was givenby DrDivyashree.A guest lecture was given on Nutrition and National wealthby Dr Somasekhar, IAP vice president to faculties and postgraduates.

The resource persons were Mr Rajesh Senior supervisor for private institutions and MrsKalaivanifrom Ethicon Johnson And Johnson institute. The workshop began after the inauguration of the workshop by DrPitchai Balamurugan, Dean, CHRI. Discussion on suturing and knotting techniques, types of sutures, suture materials and needleswas carried out. Videos demonstrating different types of knotting and suturing techniques were shown and following which hand on training was given to the participants. A total of 70 students enrolled on the workshop.

Guest lecture- Perinatal infections

The Department of Microbiology, Chettinad Hospital and Research institute organised an online lecture on "Perinatal Infections", on 26.08.2021.The guest speaker was Dr Renuka Sekar, MD,FRANZOG,Clinical Lead, Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital, Australia. Dr Sekar initially described the prevalence of such infections at Brisbane women’s hospital and shared her experiences in treating complicated pregnancies. She then spoke about the TORCH infections,emerging congenital infections, mainly Zika virus.their pathogenesis, diagnosis and management. This session was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Motivational lecture – What it takes to be a Doctor?

This motivational webinar was organized by the Department of Microbiology, CHRI on 26.08.2021 at 6.30 pm IST. The invited expert was Dr Rama Narayanan, Associate Program Director, Canton Medical Education Program. The speaker commenced her talk with an ice-breaking session and then continued to share her experiences in her three-decade-long career as a medical professional in treating patients and training interns. Dr Rama spoke on 3 Cs which are very important in the life of a doctor, Clarity, consistency and commitment. She also said that the negative traits that one should discard were complaining and comparing. She stressed the importance of team-based care and that medical professionals must serve our patients with a lot of care. Students actively interacted with her during the hour-long session in which she also advised on how to simultaneously prepare for the USMLE while pursuing the CBME curriculum. The talk helped to reorient the student perspectives and goals and was a drive to focus on the broad perspectives, long term goals & commitment and ultimately patient care and their positive outcomes.

National Eye Donation Fortnight and International Conference On Corneal Transplantation

The National Eye Donation fortnight is celebrated every year from August 25 to September 8 to create awareness among the general public regarding eye donation and corneal transplantation. As part of this initiative Department of Ophthalmology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute conducted a series of events to celebrate the fortnight. An International Conference on Corneal Transplantation was organized on 03.09.21. The program was inaugurated by DrPitchaiBala Shanmugam, Dean,CHRI. DrRajakumari, Professor of Ophthalmology welcomed the gathering. Dr Shankar. The speakers were DrAzimuddin Azim Siraj, Ministry of Health Brunei, Dr.Priti Singh, of Department of Ophthalmology, AIIMS Bhopal, Dr. Nishanth, Clinical Director, Head of Cornea Services, MN eye hospital and Chennai LASIK Laser Foundation. The topics discussed were enucleation and eye banking, basics of eye donation, eye banking and corneal transplantation, recent advancements in keratoplasty. A poster competition was organised and winners have distributed prizes. A total of 150 Undergraduate students and 10 postgraduate studentsactively participated in a Crossword puzzle event and poster competition. To increase awareness among the general public attending our hospital a Roleplay was done by MBBS students.

The Department of ENT, CHRI commemorated senior citizen day-2021 on 21.08.21.The program was initiated with a welcome address by Dr S. Rajasekaran, HOD, Department of ENT,CHRI, followed by a presidential address by Dr T. Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, CARE and a special address by Dr T. PitchaiBalashanmugam, Dean, CHRI.The event was moderated by Dr Namasivaya Naveen, Assistant Professor, Department of ENT. The program had various competitions such as essay, debate and speech competitions participated by MBBS students. Topics of competitions were difficulties faced by the Geriatric population and ways to overcome them, Possible ways of supporting the geriatric population and Quality of life of elderly in cities and villages. The performance was assessed and winners of the competition were given prizes. Also, free audiometry testing was done for senior citizens at OPD, ENT on the day.

The Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute organized a guest lecture on 20.08.2021 on ‘Insulin’. The speaker was Dr Vijaya Chandra Reddy Konda, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The moderator was Dr Vivek Valliappan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology, CHRI.The speaker discussed the basics of insulin, mechanism and their user, recent advancements in insulin for the benefit of students.The participants were II year MBBS students, MD Pharmacology Postgraduates and faculty of the Department of Pharmacology. A total of 84 students attended the program.

Guest Lecture: Physiological Adaptations to Exercise

A Guest lecture was organized by the Department of Physiology, CHRI on ‘Physiological Adaptations to Exercise’ on 14.08.2021. The speaker was Dr Annamalai C., Professor of Physiology Unit, Manipal University College, Melaka, Malaysia. The speaker discussed three core competencies of Integrated Physiology related to exercise. The unintended contribution of pandemic related lockdown towards the alarming rise in sedentary lifestyle and its possible future consequences were discussed. The high degree of the positive contribution of physical training, (even just 30 minutes of exercise daily), on the psychological as well as physical wellbeing of individuals, SAID principle regarding chronic adaptations to exercise were also discussed. The speaker motivated the students to participate in small projects related to tests for fitness that can be performed in physiological subjects. This session came to an end with an online quiz based on the topics covered. A total of 238 participants attended the guest lecture.

As part of the Fit India Movement, an initiative by UGC, CARE organized 'FIT INDIA FREEDOM RUN 2.0' on 14.08.2021 for all the students, staff and faculty members of CARE. The event occurred on the Chettinad Health city campus. Dr G. Kirubalan, Dy. Director – Physical Education, CARE coordinated the event and waved the flag for marathon running.A total of 112 runners participated in the event.

Awareness Programme On World Organ Donation Day

The Department of General Surgery, CHRI conducted an awareness programme and CME to commemorate World Organ Donation Day on 13.08.21. The Organizers were Dr Ragumani, Dr Prabakar and Dr Srinivasan, Department of Surgery. The speakers were Dr Shankar C Head, Dept. of Ophthalmology, DR. C. Manohar, Head, Dept. of Forensic Medicine, CHRI and Dr Arun Kumar. A Head, Dept. of CTVS, Sri ManakulaVinayagar Hospital, Pondicherry. The topics discussed were Cornea Transplantation Medico-Legal Aspects Of Organ Donation And Heart Transplantation. Following this, a health talk was given to patients by the Postgraduates on organ transplantation at the Surgery OPD. The Postgraduates explained to the target audience how can a person be a lifesaver even after death and motivated patients and students to register as organ donors. In addition, a quiz competition was conducted for the UG students and winners were given prizes.

The guest speaker discussed types of cochlear implants, indications and outcomes of the implants. Recent advances in surgical procedures using cochlear implants along with video demonstration. All undergraduate students, postgraduate students and facultyattended the event. A total of 124 participants attended the event.

International Youth day-2021

International youth day is celebrated every year on August 12 and the theme for this year 2021 is ‘Role of youth in transforming food system’. On behalf of CARE, the Department of Anatomy, CHRI organized the International youth day celebrations on 12.8.2021. Special lecture, student seminar, e-essay writing and e-poster making competitions were conducted in this connection. Dr. S. Manickamand and Dr Y. Janani were the coordinators. Dr Pitchai Balashanmugam, Dean, CHRI delivered a special address and emphasized the role of youth in all spheres of life. Then, Dr T. Balasubramanian,Vice-Chancellor, CARE delivered the presidential address. Dr Shyamtanu Pal, Associate Professor, Chettinad School of Law delivered the keynote address. Ms Ashaya. D, I year MBBS student delivered her views on the role of youth in transforming food systems as a part of student’s seminar. 232 participants attended the program.An essay competition was conducted on the theme: Role of youth in transforming food systems. The theme of the poster competition was the Impact of COVID-19 pandemic onhuman health (OR) Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food systems. Cash prizes for the winners and certificates for all those who participated in the competitions were given.

Workshop On Stapler Bowel Anastomosis

The Department Of General Surgery, CHRI in collaboration with ETHICON (JOHNSON & JOHNSON) organized a workshop for the Postgraduates on ‘Stapler Bowel Anastomosis’ on 10.08.21. The Chairperson was Dr Anantharamakrishnan, Professor and Head, Co-chairperson was Dr Kishore Babu EP, Professor and the organizing secretary was Dr Affee Asma, Professor, Dept of General Surgery,CHRI. The resource person and instructor was Dr Sudeepta Kumar Swain, Professor and H.O.D of Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Apollo main hospital, Greams road, Chennai. The speaker discussed“Science Of Tissue Handling” and this was followed by two relevant case presentations by the postgraduates and a group discussion concerning bowel anastomosis. An informative and demonstrative video series on Intestinal staplers were then screened.A hands-on workshop was conducted with various intestinal stapler kits (on animal intestines), organized by the Ethicon team. Demonstration of the anastomosis was done by, Dr Sudeepta Kumar Swain, and the faculty of the Department of General Surgery. A Quiz contest on Stapler Bowel anastomosis was conducted and the participants were awarded certificates.

The event was moderated by Dr Shiek Fareeth Ahamed S, Assistant Professor, AHS. The scientific session was delivered by Ms Priya Gautam, Examiner of Copyrights, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), New Delhi, Government of India. It was followed by a discussion session. The participants raised questions and doubts which were addressed by the speaker. The total number of participants was 117.

Workshop on Basic medical to Clinical research- Bridging the gap

The Department of Anatomy, CHRI conducted a one-day Workshop on Basic medical to Clinical research- Bridging the gap on 07.08.2021.The resource persons were Dr Srikumar Chakravarthi, Director of research, innovation and postgraduate studies, MAHSA University, Malaysia and Dr K. Deepa, Associate professor, Quest international university Malaysia. Dr T. Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, CARE inaugurated the event and Dr Pitchai Balashanmugam, Dean, CHRI addressed the gathering. Dr Srikumar gave a brief outline of clinical research and various types of clinical research. He also insisted on the fact that basic and clinical research are interdependent. He also discussed how important for a researcher to create a digital footprint. Dr Deepa, outlined the various elements of basic research, challenges in conducting good research and also highlighted various ways for funding our research and organizations both national and international which fund research from startups to major grants. Research for undergraduate students was highlighted.A hands-on workshop was conducted with the participants who were briefed about identifying a good research topic. Then they were assigned to breakout rooms into a group of 6 to 8 members and they were given an assignment for the presentation of protocol. One participant from each group was allowed to present their topic briefly for two minutes and the resource person gave various inputs. The event ended with the participant's feedback. A total of 300 participants attended the workshop.

The Department of microbiology, CHRI organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Pathogenesis And Laboratory Diagnosis Of Covid 19’ on 03.08.21.The speaker was Dr Anuradha K, Professor and Head, Department of microbiology, Mysore medical college and research institute, Mysore.The speaker gave a detailed view on the pathogenesis of Covid 19 which included morphology, host range, life cycle, mode of infection, Cytokine storm, multi organ involvement with lung inflammation in detail. Under the laboratory diagnosis, various clinical samples were to be collected for testing and their procedure was covered. Diagnostic modalities such as molecular techniques, antigen detection techniques, antibody detection techniques were also included. The newer test which is in pipeline was mentioned. The session ended with a brief discussion on the queries raised by the students.

The moderator was Dr. Rajeswari Thivya, Associate professor, Dept of Pathology, CHRI. The speaker spoke about complete blood count, peripheral smear and she discussed a few clinical cases. The participants were II MBBS students, postgraduates and faculties of Pathology Dept, CHRI. 150 participants attended the guest lecture. At the end of the section, there was an interactive section and the speaker cleared the doubts of the audience.

Outreach Program- Functional Benefits Of Hydration

An outreach program was conducted by the Department of Physiology, CHRI for housekeeping staff of CARE on 31.07.2021 at the atrium of College block, CHRI. A total of 36 staff participated in the program.Thehousekeeping staff were briefed regarding the volume of water in the various body fluid compartments and their functions,to understand the importance of staying hydrated. Mrs. Savitha Niren, Assistant Professor, highlighted the symptoms of dehydration and provided tips regarding how to maintain hydration levels at the workplace, especially for those participants involved in strenuous physical activity. The possible medical consequencesof being in a state of chronic dehydration, including increased risk of urinary tract infections, renal calculi and constipation, were enumerated by Dr. Meena, Assistant Professor. She also cautioned the participants regarding the long term irreversible health complications if they persisted in remaining dehydrated on a chronic basis. The program concluded with the distribution of complimentary bottles of buttermilk and water among the participants, who thanked the organizers for opening their eyes to the many facets of a routine condition faced by many and assured that the measures listed to prevent dehydration shall henceforth be diligently followed by all among the audience.

WORLD ORS DAY- 2021

The Department of Pediatrics, CHRI, commemorated ‘World ORS Day’on 29.07.2021. The morning session started with a Role Play involving the postgraduates of Pediatrics department and CRRI’s at the OPD. The role play insisted the importance and necessity to give ORS in the treatment of all diarhhoeal disorders in children. This was shortly followed by a demonstration session of preparation of ORS by nursing staffto the patients and the attenders. This demonstration was guided and supervised by Dr. Alexander, Professor of Pediatrics. ORS sachets were distributed to all the participants of the event. A guest lecture was organized on the same day. The lecture was given by Dr. S .Thangavelu, Director of Pediatrics, Dr. Mehta’s Children’s Hospital who highlighted the importance of ORS and intravenous fluids through various case scenarios. It was an interactive session attended by postgraduates from CHRI and other institutes. The session was moderated by Dr. Umadevi, HOD, department of pediatrics, CHRI.

Campus Interview And In - House Placement- 2021

Career counselling and placement cell, CARE conducted campus interviews and in-house placement from 28.07.21 to 18.08.2021. Institutions participated in campus interview were Madras Medical Mission, Mogappair, Chennai, Chettinad Super Specialty Hospital, Kelambakkam. Chettinad Hospital And Research Institute, Kelambakkam, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai And Sugam Hospitals, Tiruvottiyur. a total of 100 final yeyearsSc., nursing students & two post-basic B Sc nursing students attended the campus interview. In all the interviews, a pretest interviews assessment was done.The campus interview team from MMM were Mr Isaiah Johnson, HR Manager, MrsRanjitham, Chief Nursing Officer.Mrsanjitham CNO highlighted the hands-on skill training and work experience in MMM. 85 B Sc(N) students attended the interview and 20 (24%) got selected in the interview.The In-house Placement interview team from CSSH was MrsHannah IsabellahPaulraj, Chief Nursing Superintendent and MrsLalitha, Assistant Nursing Superintendent. Direct interviews of 82 B Sc(N) and 2 Post Basic B Sc(N) students were carried out and 70 (83 %) students got selected in the interview. The In-house Placement interview was conducted by MrsVimala.I, Nursing Superintendent, CHRI. The direct interview was conducted for shortlisted students- 81 B Sc (N) and 1 Post Basic B Sc(N) studentand 72 (88%) students got selected in the interview.The campus interview team from Apollo Hospitals was MsEzilabeth, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, MsAmulya Ajay, Asst. Manager – Talent Acquisition, MsJeevitha, Senior Nursing Educator, MsBlessy, Clinical Instructor. The interview was conducted for 95 B Sc (N) and 2 Post Basic B Sc(N) students and 50 (51%) students got selected in the interview.The online interview was conducted by MsPaniRoselin, Nursing Superintendent, Sugam Hospital, Tiruvottiyur. 18 B Sc(N) students attended the interview and 5 (28 %) students got selected in the interview.The institutional Career cell support was done by CCN Faculties, Dr S HepsibahSharmil, Mrs Manjula. The final session had an innovative quiz competition from the topics of the conference, open to CRRI’s & undergraduates. A total of 250 delegates both UG & PG residents & faculties from across various regions attended the conference.

The Department of Physiology, CHRI organized a guest lecture on 24.07.21 on the topic ‘Cardiac failure’. The speaker for the session was Dr. Vamshidar, Department of Physiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar, Telangana. The speaker started his presentation with a systematic approach by delivering a lucid and precise step-by-step description of how each cause of cardiac failure (as described under the various classifications) results in the reduction of its functional status. He also discussed the pathophysiological basis of every aspect of clinical presentation of cardiac failure in a simple and easy to understand flowchart format. He also discussed the physiological basis of pharmacotherapy prescribed for the management of chronic cardiac failure. The speaker responded to questions raised by the participants and clarified the doubts. A total of 233 students attended the guest lecture.

The Department of Physiology, CHRI conducted a guest lecture on 24.07.21 on the topic ‘Shock’. The resource person was Dr. Nithin Ashok John, Professor and HOD, Department of Physiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar, Telangana. The speaker discussed the physiological compensatory mechanisms involved in circulatory shock as well as the clinical picture and management of various types of shock. The speaker also emphasized the presence of exam-oriented questions with answers in the current stage but the correlation was drawn between the pathophysiology and the symptoms as well as signs in a patient presenting with shock in the emergency ward. The approach of the speaker was highly appreciated by the students and the students were overwhelmed with the clinical information on the topic provided as part of the presentation. A total of 233 students attended the guest lecture.

The Department of Community Medicine, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute organized an online guest lecture on ‘Eradication of Poliomyelitis: Where do we stand?’ on 22.07.2021. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Himashree Bhattacharyya, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Guwahati, Assam. The speaker discussed the possible ways to eradicate certain diseases and current strategies.She explained in the detail the types of polio, their causative viruses, the types of vaccines and their schedules, also the vaccine-derived complications, such as VAPP (vaccine-associated paralytic polio) and VDPV (vaccine-derived polioviruses), the surveillance of poliomyelitis and re-emergence of polio worldwide recently. She discussed the endgame and eradication strategies in place to control and move towards the goal of global polio eradication.The participants of this E-Lecture were 6th-semester students, Postgraduates and Faculty from the Department of Community Medicine. A total of 92 participants attended the lecture.

Use of Animals in Medical Research and Animal Handling

The Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute organized an E-Guest lecture on ‘Use of Animals in Medical Research and Animal Handling’ on 17.7.2021. The speaker was Dr.Venu Gopala Rao Konda, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. The moderator was Dr. S. Saradha, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, CHRI.The speaker discussedthe history of animal usage in medical research, the need to use animals in research, detailed the role of lab animals like mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, monkeys, birds and zebrafish. The role of CPCSEA and the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee was also discussed. Video on animal handling was also played.A total of one hundred and twenty-seven(118) participants attended this guest lecture. The participants were II year MBBS students, MD pharmacology postgraduates and faculty of the Department of Pharmacology.

Seven stations were set for the workshop with each station having a warmer, intubatable manikin and whole resuscitation kit. We had 5 participants per instructor. The instructors rotated across stations after each session: Preparation at birth and routine care, initial steps, positive pressure ventilation, Intubation, Chest compressions and Medications. Demonstration of the complete NRP sequence (Megacode) was done by the Instructor after these sessions. After lunch, participants were assessed by their performance in the Integrated skills station (ISS). After the ISS assessment, students performed as a team in the simulation stations. This team performance was video recorded and the team was debriefed about the same at the end. Following this, resuscitation in special considerations like floppy neonate, congenital airway anomalies, pneumothorax was discussed. Additional considerations during preterm resuscitation, setting up of blender and T piece resuscitator, oro/nasopharyngeal airway insertion, laryngeal mask airway indications and insertion were demonstrated to the participants.Feedback was obtained and the participants were very satisfied with the workshop training.

A CME was conducted by the Department of Anatomy, CHRI on Lymphatic drainage of Head & Neck on 17.07.21. The Speaker of the CME was Dr. P.K.Sankaran. Associate professor, AIIMS, Mangalagiri. A.P. The moderator was Dr.TK Balaji, faculty, Department of Anatomy, CHRI. The speaker delivered a detailed presentation on the topography of various lymph nodes and how they are classified based on their structure and function. He discussed the various structures draining into these lymph nodes. He also discussed the importance of the various clinical conditions in which these nodes are involved and how to diagnose them. A total of 245 participants attended includingstudents and faculty.

In an initiative to contribute towards a sustainable environment and ecosystem, Chettinad Sarvalokaa Education, international School along with Chettinad Academy of Research & Education conducted a mega sapling plantation initiative on 16.07.2021. The Honorable Chancellor Mrs. Geetha Muthiah planted the first sapling followed by Dr. T. Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, The students of CHRI, staff & faculty of Chettinad Academy of Research and Education, Students, Parents and Staff of Chettinad Sarvalokaa Education international School actively participated in the tree sapling plantation. Around 2500 saplings of 200 indigenous species of trees were planted on 4.5 acres under this initiative.

The Guest Speaker of the lecture was Dr.V.Sakthivadivel, Associate Professor and HOD In-charge, Department of General Medicine, AIIMS, Hyderabad.Dr. A. Ruckmani, Prof & Head, Department of Pharmacology, CHRI gave a brief introduction about the topic. Dr.M.Duraivel, Asst. Professor introduced the speaker. The speaker covered the types of myocardial infarction, its pathogenesis, biomarkers, ECG changes and the therapy in detail. Scientist – E, Head of Division of Online Courses, ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, India. on ‘Design and Delivery of health-related MOOCs: NIE's experience’. It was followed by the valedictory function and vote of thanks by Dr.Hepsibah S, Principal, Chettinad School of Nursing. More than 250 faculty members of CARE attended the conference.

The speaker discussed in detail the techniques of the autopsy. He also discussed medico-legal aspects of autopsy and explained with real case scenarios. Role Of Kidney In Acid-Base Balance

The Department of Physiology, CHRI organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Role Of Kidney In Acid-Base Balance’ on 10.07.21. The speaker of the event was Dr. Rajalakshmi R, Professor and HOD,JSS Medical College, Mysuru, Karnataka.Following a warm welcome by the Head of the Department of Physiology, CHRI, the speaker began her session with an overview of how the body maintains the pH within a narrow physiological range despite routine biological activities resulting in near-constant addition/loss of protons from the body. She also elucidated the mechanisms involved in the acidification of urine associated with the formation and reabsorption of bicarbonate ions by renal tubular epithelium, in a clear, concise and simple manner. A total of 233 participants attended the guest lecture. Students received a precise understanding regarding how to go about recognizing acid-base imbalance at the bedside and the investigations required to confirm the cause, type of disorder apart from confirming if compensatory mechanisms have come into play.

The Department of Psychiatry, CHRI conducted an Online International Conference on the topic “Covid 19 and Mental Health” on 8th and 9th July 2021. The speakers on the first day were Dr.Anil Prabhakaran, Dr.Sundar Gnanavel, Dr.Raman, Dr.Naveen Kumar, Dr.Chethan and Dr.Karishma Kulkarni. Hassan Mohammad, who delivered the lecture was an international faculty with 16 years of experience in teaching undergraduate medical students in Libya and Saudi Arabia and he is a Lecturer at, Department of Anatomy,Northern Border University, Arar, Saudi Arabia. Extraocular muscles of the eyeball are important structures that need a good understanding to correlate their function and clinical features. The speaker introduced the topic and discussed the topic with a detailed presentation and relevant pictures. The speaker engaged the students by posing questions and ensured that the session was interactive and productive. A total of 199 students have attended the guest lecture.

National Doctors day is celebrated every year on the 1st of July in the memory of an Indian Physician and Bharat Ratna Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.Our Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI) commemorated this day on 01.07.2021 via online mode. The program was hosted by Dr. Sabari Sridhar. O.T, Professor and HOD of the Department of Psychiatry, CHRI. Dr. Pitchai Balashanmugam, Dean, CHRI welcomed the dignitaries, doctors, interns and medical students. This was followed by the welcome address by Vice-Chancellor, CARE Dr. T. Balasubramanian. The presidential address was given by Smt. Geetha Muthiah, Chancellor, CARE. She acknowledged the care,commitment, compassion and resilience of the doctors and congratulated all the doctors who worked selflessly treating more than 7500 COVID patients in our hospital which is the highest among private hospitals of the state. The honourable chief guest of the event was Padma Shri Dr. B. N. Gangadhar, President, Medical Assessment and Rating Board, NMC who is a former director of NIMHANS and icon of the mental health domain in India with many other credentials. The chief guest spoke about the achievements made by Dr. B. C. Roy in the field of medicine and insisted on the need to follow the model put forth by Dr. BC Roy. He hailed the doctors for their relentless efforts during the first and second waves of the COVID pandemic. He greeted all the postgraduates who contributed to treating COVID patients irrespective of their discipline. He thrust upon the importance of research in India and he envisaged more volumes of researches from the Institution. The celebration ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Prabhu Mayakesavan, Director of Medical Services. The registrar, Ms. Jeyendra Saraswathi and Vice-Principal Dr. Arun Kumar and Dr. Jaganathan, Emeritus Professor of Radiology were present during the meeting. The Department of Biochemistry, CHRI conducted a guest lecture on 26.6.2021 on the topic ''Sunshine vitamin and health''. The speaker was Dr Ashika. M.S, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Govt T D Medical College, Alappuzha, Kerala. Dr Santhini Gopalakrishnan. S Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI was the moderator for the session. The speaker gave an interesting talk about the sources of vitamin D, its synthesis from cholesterol and its role in the development of clinical diseases. She gave an insight into the recent research developments about the role of vitamin D deficiency in the development of diabetes, cancer, skin disorders etc. All the students actively participated in the session. A total of 250 students benefited from the session.

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI, organized a Guest Lecture on 25.06.2021 on Pathogenesis and recent trends in the laboratory diagnosis of Leprosy. The resource person was Dr.A.V.Sangeetha, Deputy Director, Central Leprosy Training and Research Institute, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The guest speaker gave a detailed view on the morphology of Mycobacterium leprae, various modes of cultivation, epidemiological aspects, its pathogenesis and the various types of leprosy based on the immune status of the host. The speaker also listed the recent advances in the laboratory diagnosis of leprosy.A total of 121 participants attended the meeting.

International Yoga Day -2021

The international day of yoga (IDY) for the year 2021 was commemorated by NSS and UBA, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) on 21.06.2021. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr T Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, CARE. The programme started with an invocation song followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami, NSS, PO and UBA coordinator,CARE. The Chief Guest delivered the inaugural address highlighting the importance of Yoga and the origin of yoga practice. The speech was very motivating for all the participants and after the completion of his speech, a video demonstration of different types of breathing exercises was screened. The expert who demonstrated Yoga was Ms. Kamlesh Barwal, Director of SriSri Yoga, Art of Living and she elaborately explained the various types of breathing exercises and their benefits in combating COVID 19. Then the vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Nancy Victoria, NSS, PO, CARE followed by the National anthem to conclude the programme. The participants were the different volunteers of NSS, UBA, students from different constituent colleges of CARE, faculties and staffs.A total of 100 participants attended the event.

The Department of Pathology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute has organized a national conference- CHETPATHCON on the topic ‘GYNEC PATHOLOGY – A REVISIT’ on 19.06.21. The Organizing Chairperson was Dr. R. Vijayashree, Professor and Head, and the organizing secretary was Dr. N.R.Rajesh Kanna, Professor, Department of Pathology.The speakers were Dr. Kanthilatha Pai – Professor, Dept of pathology, KMC, Manipal, Dr. Shivanjali Raghuvanshi, Associate professor, Dept of Pathology, King George medical university, Lucknow, Dr. Sharada Rai, HOD, Dept of pathology, KMC, Mangalore and Dr. Sarala Ravindran, Consultant histopathologist, Pantai hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Kanthilatha talked about abnormal uterine bleeding, starting from the very basics of endometrial histology, going into the different phases of the menstrual cycle and the various entities that are encountered. The lecture was followed by an interactive slide discussion of the participants. The second session was on endometrial malignancies by Dr. Shivanjali. She covered the WHO classification of endometrial carcinoma with a potpourri of interesting cases and discussed in detail the molecular subtyping of the endometrial tumours. This was followed by the third session by Dr. Sharada session on benign cellular changes in Pap smears, in which madam started with the very basics of pap smear and went on to the benign cellular changes encountered in various situations and their diagnosis. The last session was on ovarian tumours and the speaker was Dr. Sarala Ravindran. She discussed various ovarian tumours, their morphology, immunohistochemical profile and an approach to the diagnosis. A total of 217 participants have attended the conference.

Saravanan, Professor & HOD, Department of Physiology, Government Medical College, Sivagangai, Dr. Vijayashree, Professor & HOD, Department of Pathology, CHRI, Dr. Bijin Oliver John, Assistant Professor, Department of Geriatric Medicine, Government Medical College, Vellore, Dr. Pratheema Ramachandran, ICU coordinator, Senior Consultant, Critical care medicine, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, OMR, Chennai and Dr. Vikas Menon, Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry, JIPMER, Pondicherry.The keynote address on the theme of the e-conference by Dr.Vishwanatha Rao introduced the topic of stress and related it to the encounters and trials we experience in life.Dr. Saravanan narrated the story of two friends, Raj and Vimal,with contrasting personalities and lives, where he connected each chapter of the story to the physiology relevant to their age, with regards to the impact of stress on their bodies and their functional reserves towards combating it. Dr.Vijayashree discussed the complex cellular responses to stress. Dr.Bijin Oliver John discussed what needs to be considered by a geriatric team to help their patients manage the various stressors being faced. He also discussed the fact that even a small degree of emotional neglect may be a great source of stress for our senior citizens and suggested few measures that can be implemented at home for the stress-free care of the elderly.DrPratheema Ramachandran provided an insight on the stress faced at the level of every role played in society – be it as a medical professional dealing with the loss of patients despite one’s best efforts, as an ICU patient’s attender, as a colleague of someone dealing with the loss of a loved one, as a parent and many others. The final speaker of the day, Dr. Vikas Menon made us aware of the many simple self-help strategies to cope with stress, with practical demonstration, that are immensely helpful for a lot of the people in the forum. He also provided a list of available online resources which can be utilized by all present, to reduce the adverse effects of the prevailing stressful environment that all of us are exposed to. The open house session was highly interactive with many interesting questions proposed by the students and faculty attending the conference. The vote of thanks was proposed by Professor Dr.Anbarasi M of the Department of Physiology, CHRI and with that, the curtains closed on this successful event. A total of 780 participants attended the program.

Mucormycosis

A Guest lecture on ‘MUCORMYCOSIS’ was organized by the Department of ENT, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute on 09.06.21. The guest speaker was Dr. Harshavardhan N Reddy, MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru. Professor Dr.Priya welcomed the participants and introduced the speaker. The speaker discussed the pathogenesis of mucormycosis, the clinical features and investigations and the various treatment strategies for mucormycosis in the current COVID-19 scenario. At the end of the lecture, there was an interactive session. A total of 150 participants attended the lecture.

Creation of Anatomy Resources as E-Content

The Department of Anatomy organized a one day workshop on “creating e-content using e-resources in Anatomy” on 5th June 2021. Dr. Sangeetha, the resource person outlined the challenges in remote learning during the pandemic situation especially conducting practical sessions and dissection. Since the I MBBS students are fresh to the medical curriculum they were introduced to various learning platforms and resource materials which were free of cost and also paid. She also discussed various methods adopted in different medical colleges and also gave various tips as to how to make learning interesting. Various repositories of dissected images and histology images and how to utilize them were also discussed. Effective use of whatsapp and how to make PowerPoint interesting with Giff images and animations were demonstrated to the participants. In the afternoon session a hands-on workshop was conducted. The students were divided randomly into groups and allotted in breakout rooms. A topic was assigned to each group and a short video of 5 mins was required to be prepared by the students using the resources discussed earlier. The faculty served as moderators for the session and finally after the stipulated time each group was called to present their video. The pros and cons of each material was discussed and the best three videos were selected for certificate of appreciation. The workshop concluded with the participant’s feedback and their views on the workshop. A total of 255 participants attended the workshop.

This is conducted in collaboration with Association for Harm Reduction Education and Research (AHRER), Mumbai. The speakers of the conference were Prof. R.N. Sharan,Professor, Radiation and Molecular Biology Unit, Department of Biochemistry, North-Eastern Hill University,Umshing, Shillong, Dr. SreeSucharitha,Professor, Department of Community Medicine,Research Co-ordinator-Central Research Lab, Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai Ms. Nima Matthew,Clinical Psychologist, TTK Hospitals, Chennai, Dr. Prem Kumar,Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai and Dr. Pradeep R, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Madha Medical and Research Institute, Chennai. The discussion held included their experiences regarding Smokeless tobacco, women smokers, nicotine dependence and counselling for dependent smokers. The scientific sessions were followed by oral and poster presentations.Six participants had presented oral papers, and 8 participants presented the posters, which was evaluated by a panel of judges. Postgraduates and faculty from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have presented scientific papers. A total of 102 students, faculty members and public health specialists across the country and internationally attended the conference. The conference had two Tamil Nadu Medical Council credit points.

Hitting the trail of Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

The weekly CME was conducted on the topic of Hitting the trail of Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia on 28.05.2021 via online mode. The speaker was Dr. Femela M – Professor, Department of Pathology– Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI). The speaker discussed autoimmune haemolytic anemia (AIH). She began the talk by giving an overview of AIH following which she classified the disorder into its well-documented subsets viz. warm AIH, cold AIH, mixed AIH. She also added a note on drug-induced haemolytic anemia. The pathophysiology and pathological diagnosis of AIH were well-outlined during the CME. The difficulties in diagnosing AIH and approaches towards overcoming them and the role of transfusion therapy in AIH and its associated complications were also discussed. The speaker constantly interacted with the postgraduates on the forum and educated them on the core principles of AIH

Seminar On Carcinoma Pancreas

A seminar was organized by the Department of Surgery, CHRI on the topic of Carcinoma Pancreas on 28.05.2021.The program began with the welcome address by Prof Dr P Ragumani, HOD, Dept of General Surgery and was moderated by Prof Dr K Senthil Kumar. The guest speakers were Dr A Sandip Chandrasekar, Gastroenterologist from Royal Care Hospital, Coimbatore. Dr K Balu, consultant surgical Gastroenterologist, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and Dr Srivatsan Gurumurthy, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Minimal access surgeon from GEM Hospital,Chennai. The topics discussed were clinical presentation and investigations for carcinoma of the pancreas, preoperative assessment and patient counselling,and management of carcinoma pancreas highlighting the open surgical procedures,chemotherapy.The seminar also had a discussion on minimally invasive surgery for carcinoma pancreas with surgical video demonstrations of laparoscopic and robotic pancreatic surgeries. The program came to an end with the vote of thanks by Prof Dr R Anantharamakrishnan. The seminar was attended by a total of 152 participants(112 students,25 postgraduates and 15 faculty). Interactive discussion occurred at the end of each session.

The Department of Biochemistry, CHRI organized a two days conference on Genomics Conclave 2021 on 27th and 28th May 2021.Dr. Santhini Gopalakrishnan.S, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI was the organising secretary and SK. Murugavel, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI was the Joint organizing secretary for the event. The national conference started with the welcome address by Dr.S.Sumathy, Professor & HOD; Department of Biochemistry. This was followed by the scientific session on PCR Primer Design and the resource person for the workshop was SK. Murugavel, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI. The resource persons were Dr Giriraj Chauhan chief scientist, CCMB, Dr Prashant, Professor, JSS Medical College, Mysuru, Dr Rebecca Jamesfrom Kozhikode Medical College, Kerala, Dr Akila Prashant, JSS Medical College, Mysuru and Dr Sahnmuga Priya. The topics discussed were Bedside to Bench to Bedside: The Saga of Genetic Testing, DNA markers in human health, Micro RNA -a small molecule with big prospects, diagnostic and therapeutic implications of micro RNA in human diseases and single nucleotide polymorphism. The concluding session of the conference was by Dr Srinivas H on a Whole-genome SNP study using next-gen sequence. The conference ended with an interactive Q & session. The conclave was attended by more than 340 Participants who participated in the conference and 240 attended the workshop from all over India comprising both Government and Private medical colleges.

The Department of Biochemistry, CHRI conducted a guest lecture on the topic ‘Lipids –Facts and Fun On 22.05.2021. The speakers were Dr Sumithra .N. Unni, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, Kerala and Dr Sumathy. S, Professor & HOD, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI. The speaker discussed the different types of lipids and their advantages.She also discussed the adverse effects of trans fatty acids and the disadvantages of eating junk foods.She gave an overview of Bioactive lipids and their uses in our body. The role of lipids in the development of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases were also explained. All the students actively participated in the session.A total of 250 students attended the session.

H. pylori in clinical practice

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI conducted a guest lecture titled ‘H. pylori in clinical practice’ on 22.05.2021. The speaker was Dr.Asima Banu, Professor, Dept of Microbiology, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute. The lecture covered the history and discovery of H.pylori, modes of transmission and at-risk populations, lab diagnosis and treatment guidelines, case-based explanation and the way forward. The lecture was attended by the faculty, PGs and UGs of CARE. The lecture was followed by an interactive session where H.pylori in the COVID scenario and H.pylori in children was discussed. A total of 140 participants attended the lecture.

Basics of Biostatistics- Session - II

The Department of Community Medicine, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute organized an online guest lecture on the second session of ‘Basics of Biostatistics’ on 17.05.2021. The resource person was Dr. Himashree Bhattacharyya, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Guwahati, Assam. This was the second session of this guest lecture-basic of biostatistics. The speaker gave a brief description of sample size and explained the basic terminologies used in a study/ Research. Then, the speaker spoke about the tests of significance, sampling methods, sampling errors, and methods to control those errors. She concluded the session by giving a detailed note on bias in epidemiology and a few words on how to conduct interview research and then cleared all the arising questions from participants. A total of 135 participants attended the program. The participants of this E-Lecture were 6th semester &7th-semester MBBS students, Postgraduates, and Faculty from the Department of Community Medicine.

Weekly CME - Immune Response to Viral Infections

The weekly CME for this week was held on 14.05.2021 via online mode. The resource person was Dr.A.Meena – Assistant Professor - Department of Physiology – Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI).The topic was an immune response to viral infections. Dr.Meena started the discussion by highlighting the pathological impact of viral infection on the host. She gave an update on the response of the host in adapting to such an insult. The speaker also discussed the factors that favour tissue damage in viral disease and the other factors that decide the outcome of viral infection were highlighted. A note on the host response to COVID-19 infection was also added. At the end of the lecture, there was an interactive session in which the participants shared their views on the topic.

National Technology Day2021

The Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CSPS), Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE), organized the National Technology Day on 11.05.2021. National Technology Day is being celebrated on 11thMay every year since 1998 to recognize the achievements and outstanding contributions of scientists and engineers in the field of science and technology. This event began with a welcome address by Dr. G. P. Pazhani, Associate Professor, CSPS, and by Ms. S. Neha, first-year B.Pharm student. A presentation on the importance of National Technology Day was delivered by Mr. S. Raghul, first-year B.Pharm Student. An interesting talk on the advancements of ‘Medical Technology in Health care’ was delivered by Dr. K. Ruckmani, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. Dr.Ruckmani gave an overview of the different medical tools used in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Students also had an opportunity to listen to an invited talk on ‘Industry 4.0’ by Mr. Manikandan, Head-R&D, Granules India Private Limited, Hyderabad. Mr. Manikandan gave an overview of the technological advancements leading to the evolution of Industry 4.0. Two competitions namely Picture Trivia and Debate were organized among the students of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. These events were judged by Dr. Renu Girotra, Assistant Professor, School of Law, and Dr. Antara Banerjee, Associate Professor, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

The Department of Community Medicine, Chettinad Hospital, and Research Institute organized an online guest lecture on ‘Basics of Biostatistics’ on 10.05.2021. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Himashree Bhattacharyya M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Guwahati, Assam. The participants of this E-Lecture were one hundred and thirty-five - 6th semester&7th-semester MBBS students, Postgraduates, and Faculty from the Department of Community Medicine. Biostatistics also helps in comparing, analyzing, and even presenting the scientific findings of medical data. The speaker explained in relatively simple terms with fitting examples to make the students grasp the basics better.In addition, the speaker spoke about ‘Data’ and ‘Variables.’She also explained the different types of data that can be collected and their use, and how they can be represented.The participants had a glimpse of the basics of biostatistics and an interactive session followed where discussion of queries was carried out.

One hundred and twenty-seven participants attended this guest lecture. The participants were II year MBBS students, MD pharmacology postgraduates, and faculty of the Department of Pharmacology. The audience had an interaction with the speaker at the end of the lecture.

Guest Lecture- Neuromuscular Blockers

The Department of Physiology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute has organized a guest lecture on 08.05.2021 via online mode.The speaker of the guest lecture was Dr. Jeneth Berlin Raj T, Professor & Head of Physiology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry.After a brief introduction of the guest speaker by the Head of the Department of Physiology, the session began with Dr. Jeneth delving into the structure of the neuromuscular junction at the molecular level, thereby giving the student participants a clear picture with regards to the various ligands, receptor proteins and enzymes present here. To enhance their understanding, an overview of nerve fiber structure, production of neurotransmitter from the core substrates along with the enzymes involved and its axoplasmic transport as well as saltatory conduction in a myelinated axon, were given. All of the above were regularly assessed with pre-test and post-test questionnaires involving MCQs, which made the session lively by fostering competitive participation from the students’ side. Feedback from the participants indicated a strong preference for similar interactive sessions that were helpful in the conceptual understanding of academic content. A total of 234 students participated in the lecture and such e-lectures give the students a holistic understanding of concepts in any subject of the undergraduate medical curriculum.

The Department of Anatomy, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, CARE, organized a National conference- CHANTCON 2021 on the topic ‘Can we trust our gut feeling?’ on 07.05.2021. The resource persons were Dr. Priya Ranganath, Prof and Head, Bangalore Medical College, Dr. Ganga Devi Rajapandian, Specialist Radiologist, Premier diagnostic center, Dubai, and Dr. Raghul M, Assistant professor, Paediatric surgery, ICH. There were three scientific sessions- Anatomical Approach – Sneak peek into the development of gut, Radiological approach – In newborn and Surgical approach - management of congenital Gastrointestinal anomalies _ an overview.The conference started with a sessiononthe development of foregut and midgut by Dr. Priya, followed by a wonderful and clear presentation on radiological diagnostic images of the Gut anomalies in the newborn by the expert Radiologist, Dr.Ganga Devi. These two sessions were followed by an enthusiastic and simplified presentation with a lot of intraoperative pictures by Dr. Raghul. All three sessions were moderated by renowned chairpersons from India.The afternoon session was enlightening in many ways, as faculty and students from all over India presented their posters and papers in the online mode, and prizes were given by eminent judges.The delegates commended the seamless integration of all topics as very informative and well organized.Around 485 delegates attended including national & international faculty, undergraduates, and postgraduates.

The Department of Paediatrics, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute organized a CME to commemorate World Asthma Day on 07.05.2021.World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). World Asthma day is observed every year in the first week of May to create awareness worldwide among people about this chronic respiratory disease, its precautions, and prevention.This year the theme was ‘Uncovering Asthma misconceptions’.The event had a session consisting of a demonstration by the Department of Physiotherapyabout the breathing exercises and yoga practices in Children. The guest speaker was Dr.Victor Jerome Ambrose from Great Ormond Street Hospitalfor children, UK, who spoke about the investigation and recent researches on Asthma. Incessant Emergency services during covid-19 pandemic:A case of maternal near-miss mortality

A thirty-one-year-old pregnant woman, referred from a private hospital for an obstetric scan at 03.05.2021 midnight, presented with severe pain abdomen and profuse sweating. The patient was eight weeks pregnant at the time of presentation and an urgent ultrasound revealed an ectopic pregnancy. The patient collapsed, become unconscious in the ultrasound room with a very feeble pulse and an unrecordable blood pressure. The patient was diagnosed with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. After alerting the anesthesia and critical care team about the patient, the patient was immediately shifted to the emergency operating room and was intubated. Arrangements for blood transfusion were made. Emergency laparotomy and exploration were done under general anesthesia. A right cornual ruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy was treated with right partial salpingectomy and 2.5 litres of hemoperitoneum was drained. The patient required 3 units of pack cell blood and plenty of fluids for correction of the hemodynamic status. The patient was recovering well at the post-operative ward and was discharged on 10.05.2021. A case of near-miss mortality was avoided by this timely intervention. Dr. Jennifer Britto was the duty obstetrician who performed the emergency laparotomy with Dr.Sherin (PG) and the anaesthetist Dr.Merlin and her team resuscitated the patient. Despite her unknown serology (HIV, Hep-B & Hep-C) and COVID-19 status the team has proceeded for emergency surgery to save the life of the patient. CARE congratulates the team for their selfless effort taken. Covid-19 pandemic has never been a hindrance in the emergency services by CHRI.

Weekly CME -Postpartum Hemorrhage

Weekly CME was organized by the Medical Education Unit, CHRI on the topic of Postpartum hemorrhage on 30.04.2021 via online mode. The speaker of the CME was Dr.Anuradha.C.R – Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics &Gynecology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI).This CME was an important topic that every obstetrician must be competent on. The speaker started with a working definition of postpartumhemorrhage and listing out the etiological factors responsible for it. Following this, an update on the clinical presentation of PPH was discussed in which the importance of preventive guidelines was stressed. The laboratory diagnosis and investigations while managing PPH were mentioned and a summary on the medical management as well as surgical management of PPH was put forth. On concluding the talk, an update on the recent advances related to the management of PPH was discussed.

Informed Consent Writing

The Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute organized an online workshop on ‘Informed Consent Writing’ on 28.04.2021. The objective of the workshop was to impart knowledge on the elements of informed consent, its importance in research, the process of taking consent from the study participants, how to take informed consent in vulnerable population and special situations and provide hands-on training to the participants on the preparation of informed consent document. The speakers of the conference were Dr.PankajBadamilal Shah, Professor & Head, Department Of Community Medicine, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research, Chennai, Dr. Melvin George, Associate Professor, Department Of Clinical Pharmacology, SRM Medical College, Chennai, and Dr. A. Ruckmani, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, CHRI. The program was started with the welcome address by Dr. M Anu, Assistant Professor Department of Pharmacology and organizing secretary of the workshop. The organizing co-chairperson of the workshop and Vice Principal, CHRI, Dr.R.Arun Kumar, Professor of Pharmacology introduced the theme of the workshop. The Dean, Dr.PichaiBalashanmugam delivered the inaugural address. The workshop was held in 4 sessions- Introduction And Elements Of Informed Consent, Preparation And Process Of Taking Informed Consent, Consent Taking In Special Situations/Research, and Hands-On Training on Writing the Informed Consent Document. The participants were divided into three groups and were assigned tasks by resource persons to write informed consent documents for the selected clinical studies on diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and enteric fever. One volunteer from each group presented their informed consent document and it was discussed in detail by the resource persons.Each session was followed by an interesting interaction with queries clarified. Learning Anatomy during Pandemic – The Digital Way

The Department of Anatomy, CHRI organized a CME on Learning Anatomy duringa pandemic - The Digital way on 24.04.21, via online mode. Mr.M.Renganathan, Director, Arkamulti tech was the guest speaker. The speaker introduced a learning tool- Athena Hub for first-year MBBS students. The speaker dealt with the usefulness of using the tool during the pandemic. The tool includes an Anatomy atlas, Cross-sectional images, and Radiological sections all in 3D view. A detailed demonstration was performed for the students. Queries from students were answered. Students were encouraged to use the platform as a subsidiary for regular practical demonstration classes during the pandemic. The students found the tool very useful.

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI, organized a Guest Lecture on 23.04.2021, titled “Malaria- Preventive Aspects and National Malaria Control Program” on the occasion of World Malaria Day. The resource person was Prof. Dr. Chithra A, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Madras Medical College.The speaker gave a detailed view on the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program, the disease and economic burden in India and the history of Malaria control in India. She also highlighted the current strategic action plan for malaria control in India and integrated vector management. The lecture concluded with a brief note on the vision, goals and objectives of the National Framework of malaria elimination in India - 2016-2030. A total of 133 participants -Faculty, postgraduates and undergraduate students attended the lecture.

CHRI - CME-Unstable Angina and NSTEMI

The weekly CME of CHRI was held on 16.04.2021 via online mode. The resource person was Dr.C. Ramakrishnan, Professor of the Department of General Medicine, CHRI.He spoke on unstable angina and Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI). The forum was updated on the etiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of NSTEMI. The speaker stressed the role of serial ECG recordings and /or bedside cardiac monitoring in the diagnosis of NSTEMI. The goals of management were discussed on the broad guidelines of anti-ischemic therapy, treatment during hospitalization, and long-term treatment was discussed. In concluding the discussion, the speaker summarized the AHA (American Heart Association) guidelines on pharmacological management of NSTEMI and also updated one and all on the recently introduced ESC (European Society of Cardiology) guidelines.

He gave a very simple and understandable presentation on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Heimlich maneuverwith suitable videos as well. A weekly CME was conducted on 09.04.2021 via online mode. The speaker of the CME was Dr.Santhini Gopalakrishnan S, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, CHRI.The speaker started the session with an update of the concept of Measurement Uncertainty in the biochemistry laboratory. Accurate interpretation of laboratory data is indeed essential for clinicians to practice competent healthcare. This was followed up with the ISO guidelines of Measurement Uncertainty. The causes of Measurement Uncertainty in the biochemistry laboratory were discussed. The speaker highlighted the 2 methods viz. the bottom-up approach and the top-down approach by which Measurement Uncertainty was estimated. The talk ended with the advantages and disadvantages of Measurement Uncertainty being summarized. There was an active interaction amongst the participants on the forum and many doubts were clarified by the speaker.A total of 50 teaching faculty and postgraduates of Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI) attended the CME.

The Department of Radiology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute organized a workshop program on CT guided biopsy of Soft Tissues on 28.03.2021. The resource persons were Dr.P.Muthiah, Professor of Radiology Saveetha Medical College Hospital and Dr.I.Gurubharath, Professor and Head-Radiology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. The speaker presented an overview approach for CT guided biopsy of soft tissues and also discussed various approaches related to specific anatomy parts and discussed important guidelines. A total of 16 delegates participated and underwent one-hour training session with the phantom device. All the delegates performed biopsy procedures on imaging phantom under CT guidance.

CHRI - Rare presentation of very huge fibroid uterus - successfully managed

45 years old, woman, Para 2 live 2 presented to OPD of Obstetrics & Gynecology with severe anemia and swelling of the abdomen. The evaluation revealed a Hb of 4.7 gms% and a swelling occupying the entire abdomen equivalent to a 9 months pregnant uterus. CT scan showed the mass arising from the uterus, most probably a mammoth fibroid with early degenerative changes. Relevant investigations were done, 3 units of Pack cell transfusion was given and Hb rose to 9.9 gms, subsequently the surgery was scheduled on 25.03.2021. Combined epidural and general anesthesia were given. Findings after opening the abdomen were huge fibroid of 30cm* 25cms occupying the whole abdominal cavity. Total abdominal hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries was done. The anticipated intraoperative blood loss which was about 500- 600 ml, was managed with two units of pack cell transfusion intraoperatively. The weight of the tumor was 5.88 kg. Removal of the huge mammoth tumor was carried out without any complications such as injury to ureters due to altered anatomical course and excess blood loss during surgery. Urine output was clear and adequate throughout surgery and also during the postoperative period. The patient is now recovering faster in the post-operative ward.

CHRI - Awareness program on Over the Counter drugs – Is it Right to use?

Department of Pharmacology, CHRI organized an awareness program on ‘Over the Counter drugs – Is it Right to use?’ at Rural Health Center, Poonjeri on 24.03.2021. Dr.S.Saradha gave an awareness talk about over-the-counter drugs and the need to properly use them only in emergencies. Dr.Sobita Devi, Dr.Abinaya, and Dr.Lakshitha attended the program. Around 65 participants including the rural people of Poonjeri, nursing students, faculty, and staff members attended the program. The consequences of self-medication and inappropriate drug use were explained in detail. The importance of checking the drug label for its name, manufacture, and the expiry date was also discussed. Drug samples with expired dates were shown to the people. The public was highly interactive and many of them asked doubts regarding medicines use. The faculty cleared all the doubts raised by the patients.

CHRI-World Tuberculosis Day

An awareness program was conducted by the Department of Respiratory Medicine, CHRI on 24.03.2021 to commemorate World TB Day. The awareness program was held at OPD of Hospital block with patients and their attenders as the target audience. Health education was imparted to the participants with the aid of charts and posters. The topics of the health education were identifying symptoms of TB, the importance of preventing the spread of disease, and treatment of disease. On the same day, a community awareness program was also organized at the Kovalam fishermen colony. Pamphlets consisting of health education material were distributed. The awareness program involved knowledge about components of TB treatment- followingproper cough etiquette, treatment duration, nutrit,ionand compliance of TB medications.

CHRI - World Down Syndrome Day

The Department of Pediatrics, Chettinad Hospital, and Research Institute commemorated World Down syndrome day on 23.03.2021. The theme of the day this year is to ‘CONNECT’ with the children diagnosed with Down syndrome. The event occurred in OPD of the Department of Pediatrics where children with Down Syndrome and their parents attended. MBBS students, postgraduates, and faculty members of Pediatrics and other departments of CHRI attended the event. Prof. Dr. UmaDevi and Prof. Dr. Kathir Subramaniam addressed the gathering and talked about the importance of Down syndrome in society and empowering equal rights among them. Six children with Down’s syndrome who were present on the day were asked to participate in a drawing competition & decoding a puzzle with the help of MBBS students. The MBBS students actively participated and entertained the children to help color, play, and decode the puzzle. The session also had the children doing their handprints on chart paper. This was followed by a quiz program conducted by the faculty with questions about Down’s syndrome for all the Post Graduates. The Postgraduates were divided into 4 teams and answered all the questions with active participation.

The organizing chairperson of the conference was Dr.Meenakshi N, Prof. & HOD, Dept. Of Respiratory Medicine, CHRI. The speakers of the conference were Dr. Tinku Joseph K, Dr. V.R. Pattabhi Raman, Dr. Uma Maheswari Krishnaswamy, Dr. Viswesvaran B, Dr. R M P L Ramanathan, Dr. Nagarjuna Maturu V, and Dr. Vishal Bansal. The topics covered were recent advances in bronchoscopic interventions, Recent advances in pleural interventions, Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of OSA, Newer treatment modalities in mechanical ventilation, when and whom to refer for lung transplantation, EBUS - an overview, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in chronic respiratory diseases. A total of 18 oral papers and 28 posters were presented. Oral papers were judged by Dr.Meenakshi N and Dr.Mahilmaran and posters were judged by Dr.Nancy. Prizes were given to the toppers of paper and poster presentations. The conference was attended by a total of 359 participants.

CHRI - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was commemorated at CARE on 20.03.2021. The events organized were a Cricket tournament, Face painting competition, and student speech competitions. A T10 Cricket tournament was conducted among students of constituent schools and colleges of CARE. The cricket match was inaugurated with tossing the coin by Dr.K. Pitchai Balashanmugam, Dean, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute. The players tied an orange ribbon (a ribbon code for Anti-racism) on their upper arm as a symbolism of awareness while playing the match. In the afternoon session, a face painting competition was conducted for the students with the theme ‘Youth Standing Up Against Racism’. This was a team competition and a total of 13 teams participated. The event was judged by Prof. Subbulakshmi, CCN, Dr. Antara, AHS, Ms. Ruchi Sinha, Law. The scientific sessions were followed by E-paper and E-poster presentation competition. The Conference was attended by 300 participants from all over the country, and abroad. CHRI - Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Psychiatry

An online workshop was conducted by the Department of Psychiatry, CHRI on 19.03.2021. The speakers of the event were Dr. Shiva Kumar V, Dr. Harleen Chhabra, and Dr. Vanteemar S Sreeraj, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) Bengaluru.The workshop was conducted in 3 sessions of 45 minutes Dr. Shiva had elaborately explained the history, neurobiology, and clinical applications of tDCS in the 1st session. In the 2nd session, Dr. Harleen discussed the practical application of the technique and, video training of administering tDCS was given to the participants. In the 3rd session, Dr. Vanteemar had discussed the clinical efficacy and side effects expected from the technique. At the end of the three sessions, the speakers addressed the queries raised by the participants. A total of 130 faculty and students participated in this workshop.

CHRI - Health Education -Gynaecological Problems of Young Women

A Health Education campaign has been organized by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in collaboration with the Chettinad School of Law, CARE on 17.03.2021 for the female students of Law school. The health education was given by Dr. Jennifer Britto, Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, CHRI. Topics discussed were the common gynecological problems in young women- Abnormal uterine bleeding, Amenorrhea, Leucorrhoea., Gynecological problems related to obesity, and HPV vaccination. A total of 25 female students attended the health education program. At the end of the health talk, the students interacted with the speaker, and queries were addressed.

CHRI - Role of PET CTin Pyrexia of Unknown Origin

The Department of Radiology, Chettinad Hospital, and Research Institute organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Role of PET CT In Pyrexia of Unknown Origin’ on 17.03.2021. The speaker of the event was Dr. L. Muralikrishna, Lead Consultant, Fortis-Vadapalani. Excerpts from the lecture: Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO) is defined as fever above 38.5°C lasting for 3 weeks, of which at least 1 week has been spent in a complete and comprehensive investigation without a conclusive cause. Bacterial infections, human immunodeficiency virus, hidden malignancy, sarcoidosis, and autoimmune disorders are some other important causes of PUO. Typical radiologic investigations include chest radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. An atlas of cases where these investigations had been inconclusive but fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography demonstrated the site of pathology and directed histologic diagnosis were discussed. A total of 60 participants attended the guest lecture.

A RARE CASE OF BILATERAL CHRONIC RUPTURED ECTOPIC – SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED

A 29-year-oldwoman Para 2, Live 2, Abortion 3 with previous two LSCS camewith complaints of abdominal pain since 15 days, vomiting since 2 days ( 5 episodes in total), and dyspareunia since 15 days. She had regular menstrual cycles, 3/28 days, her LMP was 9/3/2021. She is married for 3 years, 3° consanguineous marriage. She had two live births, both by LSCS and 3 MTP for unwanted pregnancy. H/o Cu-T usage 5 years back, it was removed 3 years ago. Sterilization is not done. On General and physical examination all parameters were found to be normal. On Per abdomen revealed a Soft, previous LSCS scar+ and Tenderness present in the Right, left iliac fossa, and suprapubic area. On pelvic examination,Uterus- Anteverted, normal size, mobile. Right fornix free, posterior fornix- mild tenderness noted. Minimal bleeding+ per vaginum. Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis showed Right ovary- 7.3×5.3×4.6cm, two cysts of size 1×2.9×2.3cm and 2×2.5×2.3cm. Minimal free fluid in the para ovarian space, Doppler shows normal ovarian artery spectral flow. MRI abdomen and pelvis showed- Right-sided adnexal lesion with mild hemoperitoneum noted, the possibility of rupture of adnexal lesion or ruptured ectopic. All routine Pre-operative investigations were done and found to be within normal limits. An Anesthetic assessment was obtained. The patient was takenup for exploratory laparotomy. Dense adhesions were noted between the anterior abdominal wall and uterus and the same released. Hemoperitoneum of 50ml noted and drained. Right-sided chronicruptured ectopic seen at the fimbrial end. Left-sided tubes inflamed unruptured ectopic on gross examination was noted. The left side also had features suggestive of chronic ruptured ectopic.Bilateral salpingectomy done. Histopathological examination findings revealed. Right fallopian tube- Ectopic tubal gestation with evidence of rupture with salpingitis isthmic nodosa. Left fallopian tube- Ectopic tubal gestation with the para tubal cyst. This bilateral ruptured ectopic is a rare case presentation. Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology with the team of Dr.Sailatha, Dr.Shery Angel and Dr. Saloni operated on the patient on 13.03.2021.

CHRI - Overview of Skills Lab

The Department of Anatomy, Chettinad Hospital, and Research Institute organized a CME on overview of skills lab and simulation-based training on 13.03.2021. The trainer of the skill and simulation exercises of the CME was Mrs. Princy Fernando, Laerdal Medical India, an expert in skill training emphasized the importance of acquiring skills and also mentioned about 56 competencies listed in competency-based medical education to be acquired through training in the skills lab. Some basic skills like cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Intravenous injection, Heimlich maneuver were demonstrated with suitable videos. The participants were also informed about various applications available for training in skills one such application is the QCPR classroom. The trainer also demonstrated the CPR by using simple objects in the home such as soft toys and pillows. The session concluded after interaction with the participants and addressing their queries. Around 250 students of CHRI attended the CME.

CHRI-World Glaucoma week – 2021

Department of Ophthalmology, CHRI observed the world glaucoma week from 7th to 13thMar 2021. During this week program following events were conducted: Free glaucoma screening on all the days was done at Chettinad General hospital, Urban health center, Karapakkam, and Rural health center, Poonjeri, Glaucoma awareness video were displayed for patients on all days, a Poster competition was held for UG & PG students on 13.03.21with the theme ‘Glaucoma awareness’. and Guest Lecture was organized on Glaucoma evaluation for UG & PG students on 12.03.21. Dr. Raghavendra was the guest speaker who delivered a lecture on ‘Evaluation of a glaucoma patient’.Awareness pamphlets were circulated to the general public through leading newspapers.During this week,Around600 individuals were screened for glaucoma. Those with elevated intraocular pressures were subjected to further investigations free of cost.

A rare case of hydropic degeneration of uterine fibroid

A 45 year Para 2, Live 2 with previoustwo LSCS came with complaints of heaviness in lower abdomen for 3 months and also complained of loss of weight (5kgs in past 6months), The patient had no other complaints such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, white discharge per vaginum, etc., She had irregular menstrual cycles, 10-15/30-40 days, with history ofthe passage of clots, no dysmenorrhea. She is married for 27 yrs. She had two live births, both by LSCS, and her Last Childbirth was 21years ago.On General physical and systemicexamination all parameters were within normal range. Per abdomen revealed a soft, firm midline mass that corresponds to 24 weeks. The mass was mobile side to side, midline scar was present. On pelvic examination, the cervix was found to be pulled high up and the uterus was corresponding to 24 weeks. Ultrasoundabdomenandpelvis revealedcholelithiasis and a large isoechoic lesion of 21*15*17 cm seen in the fundus of the uterus. MRI abdomen& pelvis done showed a large well defined predominantly cystic mass,in the anterior fundus of the uterus- probably a degenerated fibroid and the second fibroid in posterior fundus and cholelithiasis.General surgeon opinion obtained for cholelithiasis advised for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. The plan for lap cholecystectomy with sub-total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was made. All routine pre-operative investigations were found to be within normal limitsand anesthetic fitness obtained for the same. Proceeded with lap cholecystectomy with subtotal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was done, with peritoneal biopsy taken as early abdominal tuberculosis changes were suspected.The bladder wasdrawn up and densely adherent to the cervix all along. Proceeded with a subtotal hysterectomy, approximately700ml of blood loss so 1 unit of PRBC transfused intraoperatively.The postoperative period was uneventful. Histopathological Examination findings revealed -Leiomyoma Uterus, endometrium proliferative phase, myometrium- leiomyoma with hydropic change, and chronic calculo-cholecystits with fibro collagenous tissue with no specific pathology.Hydropic degeneration in uterine leiomyoma is a rare occurrence and is commonly reported in association with pregnancy. It is a close mimicker of malignancy due to rapid growth and atypical imaging appearances. The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology with the team of Dr.Sailatha, Dr.Shery Angel, Dr.Saloni, and Dr.Geetha Lakshmi operated on the patient on 13.03.2021 which is a rare case presentation.

(AHS) - WORLD KIDNEY DAY AWARENESS PROGRAMME

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, CARE commemorated World Kidney Day by conducting an awareness program on 12.03.2021. The theme of the event was ‘Living well with kidney disease’. The event was actively conducted with the involvement of students of renal dialysis technology. Patients attending the OPD were the target audience. The students talked about kidney and their importance in life. The students also explained the things that need to be followed in daily life to prevent kidney disease. The students were also briefed on the rehabilitation process that improves the quality of life in Kidney disease individuals. Queries and doubts of patients and their attender regarding renal failure were addressed by the students. A total of 50 patients were provided the awareness on World Kidney Day.

CHRI - NSS at CARE organized an exhibition

CHRI - NSS at CARE organized an exhibition on 10.03.2021 to commemorate India’s 75 Years of Independence Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav-Celebration on the Great Freedom Fighters. The program was organized by Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami and Ms. Nancy Victoria, NSS, PO, CARE. The NSS volunteers and students participated in the event from the constituent colleges of CARE-Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chettinad School of Architecture, Chettinad School of Law, Chettinad School of Physiotherapy, Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The participants prepared exhibits in the form of drawings, posters, and charts and explained about the Great Indian Freedom Fighters. The Session was judged by Dr. P. Senthil, Dean Incharge, Chettinad School of Physiotherapy, and Dr. Renu Girotra, Chettinad School of Law. Around 50 NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan volunteers and students participated in the event.

A HUGE RETROSTERNAL MASS IN MEDIASTINUM

A 40 year old female presented to the department of General Surgery, Chettinad Hospital and research institute, with complaints of swelling in the neck since 2 months associated with breathlessness, difficulty in swallowing to both solids and liquids, palpitations for the past 2 months. On evaluation, CT NECK showed- large mass behind the sternum in the region of mediastinum of size 49*68*85 mm arising from the left lobe of thyroid causing significant tracheal shift and luminal narrowing and displacing the major blood vessels from the heart, to the right side. The surgical team comprising of Dr. Sanjay Theodore, Department of Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, with Dr. Ananthramakrishnan and Dr. Senthil Kumar from the Department of General Surgery, and Anaesthesia team comprising of Dr. Ravindran, Dr. Balamurugan and Dr. Merlin, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, operated on the patient on 9/3/2021. Sternotomy was done, and a huge vascular mass was found in the superior mediastinum attached to the left lobe of thyroid. The mediastinal mass was successfully removed along with the thyroid gland. Patient recovered symptomatically and her breathing difficulty as well as swallowing difficulty improved drastically after the surgery. Patient is recuperating well in the ward at present. CARE congratulates the team of surgeons and anaesthetists for operating on this challenging and rare case.

Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) commemorated the International Women’s day 2021 with the theme of ‘Choose to Challenge’ on March 8, 2021. The Chief Guest of the event was Ms.Pushpa Narayan, Senior Assistant Editor, Times of India.

The event started auspiciously with a prayer. The introductory speech was given by Prof. Dr. Ruckmani, Head, Department of Pharmacology, CHRI who spoke on the history behind the celebration of International Women’s Day and the need for the attitudinal change in both men and women. This was followed by the Inaugural address by our Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Dr. T.Balasubramanian. He reminded us that every religion insists on the importance of women. He also affirmed the fact that behind every man there is a woman and talked about the contributions of Avvaiyar and Mother Teresa. He also lauded the many roles played by a woman from birth. The chief guest appreciated the institute that it has ‘CARE’ in the name. She spoke that it is the responsibility of every person in the society on women empowerment. This was followed by Dr. Merlin, Department of Anesthesiology who spoke on painless delivery.

Smt. Geetha Muthiah Labour Analgesia services was then inaugurated by the chief guest. An interesting debate was conducted with two teams of six participants from all the schools and colleges under CARE, who debated on the topic- whether women should change or men should change their attitude to prevent women oppression. Faculty and students from schools of Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, Dental College, Allied health sciences, Law, Architecture, Physiotherapy and College of nursing attended the event and actively participated in the discussion on women oppression and crime against them. The chief guest concluded that women have a strong role and ability in convincing men to change for women's empowerment. Dr. Vijayashree, Head, Department of Pathology, CHRI delivered the vote of thanks. The program was ended with National anthem.

International Women’s day 2021 - Sports Tournament

As part of the International Women’s day, 2021 celebration at Chettinad Academy of Research and Education, the Department of Physical Education conducted a Sports tournament exclusively for all women (students & staff) on 08.03.2021. The tournament comprised of various sports events such as Lucky Corner, Tug of War, Pot hitting, and Ball passing relay. This sports tournament involved female students from all the constituent colleges/schools of CARE, to play as a team. Prof. Dr. Rukmani, HOD, Department of Pharmacology inaugurated the women’s day Sports Tournament. About 350 participants, including students and staff members, took part in the events organized. The winner of Tug of War was a team of students of I year M.Sc Psychology and Runners-up were I year M.Sc students of AHS. The winner of Pot hitting event was Gayathri. R, I year M.Sc Psychology. Lucky corner and Ball pass Relay sports winners were Nursing, Physiotherapy, MBBS, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Architecture, and Faculty of Allied health Sciences students. Dr. T. Balasubramian, Vice-Chancellor of Chettinad Academy of Research & Education was the Chief Guest and he distributed the certificates and medals to the winners. The entire campus wore a festive look during this women’s day celebration and the event ended in grand splendor.

Plastic-free environment awareness campaign

NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of CARE organized a plastic-free campaign in the adopted village Kayar. Nearly 100 students and volunteers from FAHS, CCN, and CSP participated in the event. They went door to door of the villagers and collected the plastic bags and distributed cloth bags to them. This is a part of the Swacchata activity. The faculties accompanying them were Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami, FAHS, Ms. Nancy Victoria, CCN, and Mrs. Swathi, CSP.

Guest Lecture -Pain Science

A guest lecture was organized by Chettinad School of Physiotherapy, CARE on 05.03.2021on on the topic- Pain science. The speaker of the event was Mr. K. Hariohm MPT (Neurology), Clinical therapist, Spring physiotherapy center, Chennai. The speaker talked about function, senses, perception, and pain physiology. Besides, activity, the transmission of pain, modulation of pain, and treatment were discussed. Students actively participated in the question and answer session and clarified their doubts regarding the subject. This was followed by a demonstration for which students volunteered and learned the skills. A total of 100 participants attended the guest lecture.

Road Safety Day - 2021

Department of Microbiology, CHRI organized and conducted a Road Safety Awareness program, to commemorate National Safety Day-2021 on 04.03.2021. The event was done in collaboration with the NSS unit and UBA of Chettinad Academy of Research and Education. The theme for National safety day 2021 is Road safety. Around 100 student Volunteers participated from all schools and colleges under CARE. A road rally was carried out by the students to exhibit the importance of road safety awareness. The students distributed the pamphlets having safety regulations of riding vehicles, ten commandments of road safety to the vehicle riders. The students educated the two-wheeler riders without helmets on the road about road safety and insisted on wearing the helmet.

Workshop on Epi-Info Hands-on Training

Department of Community Medicine, CHRI organized a hands-on training workshop for epi-info software for the post-graduate students on 04.03.2021. The workshop was conducted at the Demo hall-11 of the College block. The resource person was Dr. Nisha. B, Assistant professor from Saveetha Medical college. She gave training on using the EPI-INFO statistical software. The training helped the participants in learning the basics of the software to analyzing the research data using the Epi-info statistical software. The training session was attended by 21 postgraduates of community medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and General Medicine. Pre-test and post-test evaluations were done and there was a significant gain in the acquisition of epi info skills.

Biosafety in Health care and Research

The Department of Microbiology, CHRI, organized a Guest Lecture on 03.03.2021, titled “Biosafety in Health Care and Research”. The resource person was Prof. Dr. J.Jayalakshmi, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, KMCH, Coimbatore. The speaker gave a detailed view on how safe handling of infectious materials in microbiological laboratories, biomedical research facilities, teaching and training laboratories, and healthcare facilities can be accomplished through the application of containment principles, risk assessment, and risk control. She also highlighted the hazardous procedures leading to infection in laboratories, the risk group organisms, Biosafety levels, Type of BSC’s, code of practice, and also the proper use of PPE. PRIDE RE-IMAGINING WOMANHOOD

Chettinad Academy of Research and Education in collaboration with AWARE India, organized an awareness campaign on 1st March 2021 for women empowerment to commemorate International women’s day. The event was inaugurated by Vice chancellor of our university Dr. T. Balasubramanian. Women activists from the Aware India Organization addressed the students of CARE, in which they discussed on topics- Gender equality, Child abuse, Mental Health and also promoted the Women safety at Schools, Colleges and Workplaces. This event happened in Lecture Hall 1 in the Academic block of our campus and more than 320 female students and faculty attended.This was followed by a PRIDE RIDE Campaign, which is a bike riding event by women that starts from Chennai and Puducherry to cover all districts of Tamil Nadu. This is being done in a view of achieving the mission statement- ‘Re-imagining Womanhood’, on this International women’s day. Our Vice chancellor, Dr. T. Balasubramanian flagged off the she-riders riding campaign.The she-riders (Woman motorcycle riders club) is all set to 1 Goal will ride for 31 days to cover all the 39 districts spreading awareness about women empowerment.

The theme of the competition was zero Discrimination against women and girls. The students from all schools and colleges under CARE university participated in the event. A total of 100 students participated in the event and the best posters were awarded prizes by Vice-Chancellor Dr. T. Balasubramanian. The winners were first prize- Harshini (first year BDS) and second prize – G.M.R Abarna (first-year MBBS).

UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS AND VACCINATIONS

The Department of Anatomy, CHRI, conducted an online CME- Universal precautions and Vaccinations on27.2.2021. Dr.RHS Rajila, Professor & Head introduced the speaker and started the session. The speaker was Dr.D.R Vedapriya, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, Sri Venkateshwara Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry. The participants of the CME were MBBS students, faculties of various departments of CHRI. The lecture started with an interactive session by the speaker on various modes of precautions taken by us in everyday life and as well as in our workplaces. Then, the speaker highlighted the need and the various methods of precautions we need to follow as medical professionals. The need to wash hands and its correct technique and the importance of masks during the COVID pandemic was stressed upon. Then an overview of different types of vaccines along with a comparison between COVAX and COVISHIELD vaccines was also given. Finally, a question-answer session was conducted and the doubts asked by the students were discussed. The total number of participants was 232.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute conducted an International Conference-CHETOGCON 2021 on 27/2/21. The themes of the conference were High-risk Pregnancy and Benign Gynaecology. The organizing secretary was Prof Dr. Vijayalakshmi and the organizing chairperson Prof and HOD Dr. Anuradha. The participants were delegates from several departments of CHRI and other medical colleges across the country. The speakers of the event were Dr. Prabha Sinha, Oman Medical College an affiliate with West Virginia University, USA, Dr. Lakshmi Shanmugasundaram, Institute of reproductive medicine and women’s health, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, Dr. Anjalakshi Chandrasekar, Madha Medical College, Dr. Sukesh Kathpalia, D.Y. Patil Medical College, Pune, Dr. Sumathi, Kilpauk Medical College and Dr. Shanthy Gunasingh, Retd. Director IOG, Present consultant TN Public Health Department. The topics of the sessions were high-risk obstetrics, Recurrent Pregnancy loss, Hypertensive disorders in Pregnancy, Gestational Diabetes mellitus, benign gynecology, Pelvic Inflammatory diseases, and Abnormal Uterine Bleeding. A Keynote address by Dr. S. Kathpalia who delivered an inspiring talk on Motherhood - Is it Safe. This was followed by the noon sessions which featured E- papers and E- posters from enthusiastic participants from various medical colleges across the country. The Conference was an academic and literary feast for all the delegates. The total participants of in the conference were 201.

WORLD LEPROSY DAY- 2021

Department of Dermatology, Venerology & Leprosy, CHRI conducted an online CME to commemorate ‘WORLD LEPROSY DAY’ on 26/02/2021 The topic of CME was ‘HISTOID LEPROSY - A Strange Disease’. The session started with an introductory talk by Prof Dr. M.S.Srinivasan, Head of the Department of Dermatology Venerology & Leprosy, CHRI followed by two lectures by Dr.Devanand.N and Dr.Soundarya.S. A paper was presented by Dr. Harshini, PG, Dermatology Venerology & Leprosy, CHRI on a leprosy case study. A total of 35 participants attended the CME. This was followed by questions from panelists & faculties of the Department of Dermatology Venerology & Leprosy, CHRI, and also from faculty of other colleges.

National Symposium on ‘Drugs acting through Enzymes and Enzymatic Receptors’

Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute organized a National Symposium was conducted on 26.02.2021. The symposium was conducted online and a total of 75 participants from various institutes across India attended the symposium. The chairperson of the organizing committee, Dr. A. Ruckmani, HOD, Pharmacology, CHRI introduced the theme of the symposium. Dr.S.Saradha, Associate Professor of Pharmacology welcomed the dignitaries and participants. The Honorable Vice-chancellor of CARE, Dr.T.Balasubramanian inaugurated the symposium and delivered the inaugural address. The Dean of CHRI, Dr. Pichai Balashanmugam addressed the participants. The speakers of the event were Dr.S.Seethalakshmi, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, ESIC & PGIMSR, KK Nagar, Chennai, Dr.K.Manimekalai, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry and Dr.A.Ruckmani, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. ANEMIA SUMMIT

Department of Biochemistry, CHRI organized a two-day national conference- Anemia summit on 25^th and 26^th of February 2021. The conference was attended by 570 participants from various medical colleges and institutes across the country. The conference was inaugurated by Vice-chancellor, CARE, Dr.T. Balasubramanian, and Dean of CHRI Dr. K. Pitchai Balashanmugam. The program started with an inaugural speech by Dr. Sumathy, Professor and HOD. The conference had eight eminent speakers from various institutes. Dr. Papathi, Professor & HOD, Department of Pathology, ICH, Madras Medical College, talked about the diagnostic approach in hemolytic anemia. It was followed by a session on the Story of vitamin B2 and vitamin B12 by Dr. Barnali Das, Consultant in laboratory medicine from Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. Dr. Chithra, Professor, Institute of Community Medicine, MMC enlightened the participants with her talk on Public health aspects of anemia. This was followed by the next session on the parasitic causes of anemia by Dr. Devasena, Prof & HOD, Department Of Microbiology, ICH. Dr. Nazira, Consultant Gynecologist, Cloud 9 hospital talked about an approach to anemia in pregnancy. Other speakers of the conference were Dr. Sreedevi Professor-General Surgery, Balaji Medical college, Dr. Akila Prashanth, Professor, JSS medical college and Dr. Kowsalya Nathan, Celebrity nutritionist who talked on surgeons’ concern on anemia, Anemia research base for public policy decision making and role of nutrition in the management of anemia respectively. On the Second day, Oral and poster presentations were conducted where participants from various universities presented their research studies. Prizes were distributed to the best oral and poster presentations.

NECK DISSECTION AND MANAGEMENT IN ORAL CANCERS

A guest lecture on neck dissection and management in oral cancers was organized by the Department of ENT, CHRI on 24.02.2021. Professor Dr. Rajasekaran, Head of the Department welcomed the guest speaker and participants. The guest speaker was Dr. Venkatesh. V, Associate Professor, Department of Surgical Oncology, Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai. He discussed on methods of neck dissection and prognostic effect of elective neck dissection in patients with oral cancer. He also mentioned the role of imaging methods such as ultrasound-guided needle biopsy, sentinel node biopsy, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography in the diagnosis of oral cancer. Faculty, postgraduates of various departments of CHRI and CRRIs attended the guest lecture. A total of 55 participants attended the guest lecture.

WORKSHOP TO ENABLE FRUTIFICATION OF RESEARCH CONCEPT TO BE FUNDED PROJECT

A workshop to enable frutification of the research concept for the funded project was organized by the Department of Research, CARE on 24-02-21. The speakers of the workshop were Prof. Ramachandran Murugesan, Dr. Shoba Narayan, Dr.Pazhani GP. The topics discussed were successful grant writing, preparing call-specific project proposals – elements of the proposal, and making your application step-wise. Dr. Murugesan gave a glimpse of how much difficult it was to gain recognition and funding based on the quantum of funds available for disbursement and the possible success rate. He also told the researchers that they should come out of the impression that research grants are only for established researchers with high credentials. To make his points clear, Prof. Murugesan then went through the proposals prepared by the faculty and advised on the kind of calls that they should look for and what changes could make their proposal better. He emphasized that the faculty must look at themselves as reviewers who have to go through several applications to select a few and that too from subjects that may not exactly fit their expertise. Prof. Murugesan’s lecture, evaluations, and discussions were followed up by Dr. Pazhani GP who explained how a project proposal has to be submitted online. Through screenshots of the project grant calls, Dr. Pazhani took the audience through what they would encounter when they start filling up their proposals. Dr. Shoba explained what a project call would require. She emphasized that the entire requirements should be prepared upfront before starting the submission process online. All three speakers advised the faculty to avoid basic errors such as spelling, grammar, lengthy sentences, unconventional abbreviations, etc., besides erroneous totaling of budget. The workshop had a total of 33 participants and hands-on exercises were given and evaluation was done with inputs shared to the participants.

INTERESTING RADIOLOGY CASE-INTRACRANIAL VASCULAR MALFORMATIONS

An interesting case discussion was conducted by the Department of Radiology, CHRI on 24.02.2021. The speaker of the lecture was DR. J.Anandapadmanabhan MD, FRCR., Consultant Neuroradiologist, Swansea Bay University Health Board, Wales NHS, UK. He talked about the case of Intracranial Vascular Malformations. Intracranial vascular malformations encompass Arterio-venous malformations of the brain and dura, cavernous malformation (cavernoma), venous malformations (developmental venous anomalies), dural AV fistula, and capillary telangiectasias. Together, IVM is the most common cause of primary intracerebral hemorrhage in young adults. Aneurysms may coexist with other types of IVM, most often with brain AVM. The patient can experience various symptoms and signs at presentation. The natural history of vascular malformations depends on lesion type, location, size, and overall hemodynamics. Digital subtraction angiography remains the gold standard, able to exquisitely delineate the location and number of feeding vessels and the pattern of drainage. On angiography, AVM appears as a tightly packed mass of enlarged feeding arteries that supply a central nidus. One or more dilated veins drain the nidus and abnormal opacification of veins occurs in the arterial phase represents shunting. Therefore we report the imaging features of intracranial vascular malformations to increase our awareness of its diagnosis and treatment. The lecture was attended by 100 participants from various colleges across the country.

CME -PAIN MEDICINE

The Department of Anesthesiology had organized a CME -Pain Medicine on 23.02.2021. There were 2 sessions of e-lectures which was followed by an interactive Q/A session. The speakers of the event were Dr. Senthilkumar Raju, Director and Consultant in pain medicine, Atlas pain care, and Dr. N. Deepak Kumar, Consultant Anesthesiologist and Pain physician, Sahasraa pain and spine center. The CME was attended by postgraduate students and faculties from the Department of Anesthesiology and Department of Orthopedics. A total of 78 participants attended the CME. Dr. Senthilkumar discussed in detail low back pain- causes, diagnosis, and treatment modalities available to treat low back pain. Dr. Deepak Kumar discussed musculoskeletal disorders namely fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, etc. The sessions were chaired by faculty from the Department of Orthopedics, Dr. Selvam, Dr. Subramaniam, Dr. Sathik Babu, and Dr. Thirumal. The CME helped the participants in understanding concepts and enhancing the understanding of low back pain and musculoskeletal skeletal disorders.

Lecture on Biomedical waste Management & Workshop on Infection Control Practices

Department of Microbiology, CHRI, organized five days event- workshop on Infection control practices from 22.02.2021 to 26.02.2021 for Nursing staffs, CRRI’s, Medical & AHS students, paramedical staffs and Housekeeping personnel. The hand hygiene awareness program was a part of this workshop, a lecture on hand hygiene awareness was held. The participants have been asked to demonstrate the various steps listed in the handwashing protocol. An elaborate guest lecture on Biomedical Waste Management was delivered by Dr. A.V.M. Balaji, Senior Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Stanley Medical College and state nodal officer for Infection control, Directorate of Medical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu on 25.02.2021. The lecture was attended by faculty, postgraduates, Nursing staff, and housekeeping supervisors. A total of 400 participants attended the workshop.

Hippocratic oath taking ceremony was observed on 19/02/2021 at Lecture Hall-3 of Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute (CHRI) for MBBS students batch 2015-2016. A total of 154 MBBS students who completed the course on 18/02/2021 participated and took the Hipporactic oath.Dean Dr. Pitchai Balashanmugam, Vice principal Dr. Arun Kumar and Dr. A. Prabakar, Professor, Department of Surgery addressed the gathering. Head and faculty members of all departments had participated in the ceremony. Meritorious students who are prize winners of medal exams conducted by various departments were congratulated by the Dean. Vice principal wished the students to achieve greater heights and excel in the career.

International Mother Language Day

The Department of Pharmacology, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute commemorated the International Mother Language Day on 19.02.2021. The event comprised of a Guest lecture and a language translation competition for the students of all the constituent colleges of CARE. The Online Guest lecture was on the topic ‘தாய் மொழியும் தமிழ் மொழியும்’ delivered by Dr.Arasendiran, Retired Professor of Tamil, Madras Christian College. The event was presided by the Vice-Chancellor, CARE and Dean, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. Around 150 participants attended the program. The lecture was followed by a group competition on a translation of selected English words. There was active participation by the medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, architecture, and law college students in the competition. Prizes were distributed to the winners. The students expressed that the program was much useful and the competition was interesting.

WORKSHOP ON FISSURES AND FORAMINA- SURGICAL ANATOMY OF ORBIT AND SKULL BASE

The eye is an extension of the central nervous system with intricate connections between cranial fossa and sinuses. Beyond cataract and refractive errors there are a plethora of disorders that affect the eye and the surrounding appendages. A workshop on Fissures and Foramina - Surgical Anatomy of Orbit and Skull base was organized by the Department of Ophthalmology on 18/02/2021 to get practice and hands-on experience about the relationship of orbit with paranasal sinuses and cranial fossa. The speakers of the workshop were Prof.Dr.Stephen Sudhakar, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Prof.Dr.S.Rajasekaran, Head, Department of ENT and Prof. Dr.V.G.Ramesh, Head, Department of Neurosurgery, CHRI. The workshop was attended by the faculty and postgraduates of the Department of Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Orbital anatomy and surgical landmarks for clinical interpretation were discussed by Prof. Dr. Stephen Sudhakar, this was followed by a discussion of surgical anatomy of Fissures and foramina on the inner and outer aspect of the skull base by Prof.Dr.S.Rajasekaran, Prof.Dr.V.G. Ramesh, demonstrated various approaches used for lesions of the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossa. This was followed by an interactive session between residents, faculties, and the experts. Around 30 participants attended the workshop.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on 11 February, is implemented by UNESCO and UNITED NATIONS with an aim to promote women and girls in science. This day insists on promotion of opportunity and equal access, participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support to young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace. Faculty of Allied Health Sciences conducted a virtual interactive session with Mrs.Sruthi Babu, Founder & CEO, Dhanvantri Biomedical Private Limited who spoke on diversity in scientific research and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council. She brought in fresh perspectives and encouraged students to undertake strategic research and innovation, addressing nationally relevant development needs. Competitions were conducted following the lecture in which students from different schools of CARE participated and were awarded prizes. This Day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology sectors. Their participation should be strengthened.

SEMINAR ON ENDOMETRIOSIS

A seminar was organized by Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, CHRI on 11/2/2021 via zoom platform (online). The moderator of the seminar was Dr.K. Vijayalakshmi, Professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The speakers of the seminar were Dr. K.Vijayalakshmi, Dr. S.Nandhini, Dr.S.Geetha lakshmi and Dr.Rizwana. The topics discussed were etiology, sites of endometriosis, types, classification and clinical presentation, investigations, management, and differential diagnosis. Recent advances in diagnosis and treatment were also discussed upon. The participants were the faculties and postgraduates from the departments of OBG & General surgery and undergraduate students. There were about 255 participants. It was followed by a case scenario-based discussion where many of the attendees interacted and discussed.

National Deworming Day - General Surgery

National Deworming Day was observed by the Department of General Surgery, CHRI on 10-2-2021. A public awareness speech and interactive session were organised by the Department,CHRI at 10.00 a.m.The postgraduates enacted a roleplay emphasising the importance of deworming, to educate the patients.The program was attended by faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students, patients and children. An awareness program was organized at Rural Health Centre, Poonjeri at 11.00 a.m. Around 60 people attended the event and it was a grand success.

The need for deworming was emphasised and the surgical complications of intestinal parasites were discussed.'

National Deworming Day - OBG

Department Of OBG, CHRI has commemorated National deworming day on 10/2/2021.This day is observed to reduce the morbidity due to soil related helminthetic infection among adults and children. The event conducted included health awareness talk to the patients at OBG outpatient department and interactive sessions with the women. The awareness event started with introductory talk by Head of the Department Dr. Anuradha. Health awareness talk was given by Dr. Jennifer Britto, Assistant Professor. She discussed on burden of the disease, mode of infection, symptoms and preventive measures with display of charts. Subsequently, effects of the disease on pregnant women was elaborated by Prof Dr. Vijayalakshmi. This was followed by interactive session with the patients in which many queries of patients were addressed. Subsequently, health talk was given to patients of CFCH and patients’ queries were addressed. Dr. Jennifer addressed to one of the query raised by the patient by explaining the importance of taking deworming tablet during pregnancy in second and third trimester

National Deworming Day - Paediatric

National Deworming Day was celebrated on 10th February 2021 by the Department of Paediatrics. It involved active participation of all faculty, post graduate and under graduate students of CRRI, staff nuses, parents and children. Audio visual presentations were given on worm infestations by Dr.Avinash and Dr.Harinie (Post Graduates). Roleplay was enacted by (Visali and Vishnu Karthika). All the queries from the audience on worm infestations were responded by CRRI. In addition, demonstration of charts was done by CRRI to emphasize the importance of deworming. This was followed by an interactive session with parents. The programme ended with distribution of free deworming medicines to all children between 1-18 years of age.

Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized a guest lecture on “Current Good Manufacturing Practices in Pharmaceuticals” from 1.30 PM to 3.00PM on 8th Feb, 2021. The resource person for the program was Mr. Dhas Prakash, M.Pharm, ISO 9001:2015 QMS Lead Auditor, Assistant Manager Quality Assurance, Adcock Ingram Ltd, Bangalore. He gave an overview of different aspects of Good Manufacturing Practices being adopted in manufacturing pharma industries. He also highlighted the importance of knowing the regulatory requirements of different countries in terms of manufacturing aspects. The session was highly beneficial to the first and second year students of B.Pharm.

Awareness Against Female Genital Mutilation- Symposium

6^th Feb 2021 was commemorated by the UN for Awareness Against Female Genital Mutilation. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology conducted a half-day symposium for creating awareness against female genital mutilation and sexual offences on women and children. The symposium was attended by doctors, nurses, students and other hospital staff. A total of 200 people attended the symposium. Prof. Dr. Anuradha, Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Dr.Priya enlisted the various types of sexual offences and the prevalence. Dr.Sherin presented a detailed discussion on the examination of a victim (eg.Rape). This event was to be very useful for practicing doctors and gynecologists from the point of view of medical and forensic areas. Dr.Sabari Sreedhar, Head, Department of Psychiatry elucidated extensively on psychological aspects of sexual offences in women and children. Dr.Preethi enlightened the audience on the various laws and prominent offences and crimes related to female genital mutation that took place in our country. Finally Dr.Nawaz Ahmed, Associate Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine gave a succint account of the medico legal aspects of sexual offences. The program was well appreciated by the audience on a positive note and the need of educating from childhood to prevent such brutality in our community was insisted. Dr. Shery acted as the moderator of the event.

Rosai-Dorfman disease- A rare case presentation

The following rare case is presented to Imaging studies to Department of Radiology, Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute. The incidence of the disease is 1 in 2,00000 mostly prevalent in the United States. A total of 650 cases have been reported since its first description in1969.

Rosai-Dorfman disease also known as Sinus histocyctosis with massive lymphadenopathy is a rare non-neoplastic disease. It is pseudolymphomatous benign disorder and patients usually present with fever, painless bilateral cervical lymphadaenopathy, elevated ESR, leukocytosis with neutrophilia and hypergammaglobulinemia. A 49 year old south Indian female was admitted in our Chettinad Academy of Research and Education with chief complaints of severe headacahe , nasal stuffiness and painless cervical lymphadaenopathy. WBCs, CRP and ESR were elevated 15K/microl,60mg/L and 83mm/h respectively. Her serum uric acid level was also elevated. Because of headache with no history of trauma Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)(GE 1.5T) with contrast was recommended for further evaluation.

Imaging Finding:

T2 hypointense homogenously enhancing lesion with sellar and suprasellar involvement measuring 20mm (CC)x 17 mm(TS) x 5mm (AP) noted causing indentation on optic chiasm which is pushed superiorly (figure 1) No significant expansion of sella.

Enhancing T2 hypointensities were noted in bilateral cavernous sinus encasing internal carotid arteries which were contiguous with and inseparable from the lesion (figure2)

Enlarged parapharyngeal and cervical nodes are noted in visualised region(figure 3)

Nodular enhancement is noted in paramedian aspect( figure 4)

Excisional biopsy of right cervical lymph node:

The histopathology report showed attenuated infiltration of lymphoplasmocytic cells and histiocytosis of varying sizes and foci of emperiolesis within the cellular borders of large, pale histiocytic cells.

On immunohistochemistry there was diffuse expression of S-100 protein by larger histiocyte cellsand all cells were negative for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and CD1a.

The diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease(RDD) was given based on pathology report.

As this disease generally resolves spontaneously, the patient was treated conservatively with steroids.

The department of General surgery had conducted CHETSURGICON 2021 on 27 , 28 and 29 of January 2021 involving the Faculty and postgraduates of various medical colleges of Tamil Nadu. The conference was conducted in both virtual mode and with in person attendance of faculty and postgraduates following all safety protocols. Various faculty Lectures, clinical case discussions and quiz were conducted on these three days. This post graduate teaching program focused on interactive sessions to understand better about 24 clinical problems through lectures, clinical demonstration and guest lectures by experts. Intercollegiate quiz competition was held.Academic profiency awards were presented.There was about 345 registration. This conference gives 6 credit hours awarded by Tamilnadu Medical Council.

Chettinad Academy of Research and Education took another novel initiative in inaugurating a specialty clinic -‘Pain And Spine Clinic’ at the Department of Anesthesiology on 18.01.2021 at OPD No.6 in A block of Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute. This pain and spine clinic was started to treat patients with chronic pain and improve their quality of life by developing a comprehensive clinical model to effectively evaluate and treat all areas of pain impacting patients.

a part of Social Entrepreneurship Cell of the Higher Education Institution, MGNCRE conducted an online workshop for motivating and promoting Swachhta and Social Entrepreneurship through preparation of ‘Social Enterprise Business Plans’ at Chettinad Academy of Research and Education. In this regard, Social Entrepreneurship, Swacchata and Rural Engagement Cell, CARE, UBA and NSS, CARE has conducted an online workshop for one-hour for the students with knowledge sharing including aspects of encouraging Social Entrepreneurship. The online workshop was in hybrid model with zoom participants as well as live streaming was done. The organizers were Dr. Priyadharshini S, Professor and HOD, Department of Microbiology, CHRI and Coordinator, Social Entrepreneurship, Swacchata and Rural Engagement Cell, CARE and Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami, NSS, PO and UBA Coordinator, CARE. There were 200 students and 50 faculties who attended the workshop. The workshop was very much encouraging for the students to become self-dependent by starting small business.

THORACOTOMY WITH BRONCHOPLEURAL FISTULA CLOSURE FOR POST-COVID SEQUELAE

31 years old male, a case of COVID-19 pneumonia admitted a month ago. The patient had moderate COVID-19 infection for which the patient was treated as per the standard treatment protocols. Despite the appropriate treatment protocol, the patient started deteriorating and the oxygen requirement kept on increasing and subsequently the patient needed Non-InvasiveVentilation(NIV). As a post-covidsequela, the patient developed pyo-pneumothorax and acute thromboembolism in the Right pulmonary artery (PE). An intercostal Drainage tube was placed,but a persistent air leak was observed due to a bronchopleural fistula. To treat the fistula,a Right Anterolateral thoracotomy with bronchopleural fistula closure was performed by Dr.Anatharamakrishnan (General Surgery) andDr. Sanjay Theodre (CTVS) with Dr.Swaminathan (Anaesthetist) and Dr.Durga Krishnan (Primary Consultant- Medicine) in the treating team. After the procedure, the patient is recovering and the clinical condition is getting stable.This unique procedure of thoracotomy with fistula closure for the treatment of post covid complication- bronchopleural fistula was performed in CHRI. CARE congratulates the team of doctors who performed this intervention on the patient with COVID-19.

Plastic-free environment awareness campaign

NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of CARE organized a plastic-free campaign in the adopted village Kayar. Nearly 100 students and volunteers from FAHS, CCN, and CSP participated in the event. They went door to door of the villagers and collected the plastic bags and distributed cloth bags to them. This is a part of the Swacchata activity. The faculties accompanying them were Dr. Koyeli Girigoswami, FAHS, Ms. Nancy Victoria, CCN, and Mrs. Swathi, CSP.
